Position Details

  • Grade 7 – £38,784 per annum
  • Fixed Term – Full Time (12 months)

  • Contract Duration: 12 months

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, demonstrating increasing awareness of different approaches to teaching and supporting student learning.
  • Design, plan and write teaching materials.
  • Lead aspects of modules and collaborate with colleagues on course development.
  • Develop and deliver an inclusive curriculum, contributing to an inclusive community.
  • Seek and incorporate feedback on teaching and engage in CPD.
  • Supervise undergraduate students and, where appropriate, act as part of a PhD supervisory team.
  • Contribute to colleagues’ educational skill through seminars or constructive discussions.
  • Build internal contacts and participate in networks to exchange information.
  • Begin scholarship activities (creation, development and maintenance of intellectual infrastructure), e.g. develop online teaching resources.
  • Participate in departmental committees and maintain memberships of professional bodies.
  • Provide student support, assessment of academic performance and feedback, and deal with disciplinary matters.
  • Undertake administrative roles allocated by the Head of Department.
  • Foster a collegial, respectful, inclusive working environment.
  • Engage in wider citizenship to support the department and discipline.
  • Engage in continuing professional development by attending relevant training courses.

Person Specification / Qualifications

  • PhD (or close to submission) in Medieval literary studies or a related subject, or equivalent demonstrable practitioner experience with appropriate certification and/or membership of a relevant professional body.
  • Experience of teaching and examining at university level with positive student feedback.
  • Experience in developing and delivering high‑quality teaching and assessment, including design and creation of successful learning environments and curricula.
  • Demonstrable ability to participate in collegial and administrative activities of an academic department and/or discipline.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience of developing innovative teaching methods for high‑quality delivery.
  • Experience in an administrative role within an organisation or department.
  • Experience providing high‑quality one‑to‑one student supervision.
  • Evidence of work undertaken (or to be undertaken) in preparation for teaching and keeping up to date with developments in the subject area, such as active membership of a professional body, demonstrable innovation in educational practice, publication in a scholarly journal, presentation of seminars or conferences.
  • Potential to attain the rank of Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

Benefits

  • Competitive salary (£38,784 per annum) for Grade 7.
