Student Intern Science Outreach (Job Number: 26000956)
Graded Casual: £13.45 per hour. Casual/Atypical (Student) – Atypical. Typical/Contracted Hours: 6 hours per week.
Starting in September 2026, funding is available for a total of 5 interns to work within this suite of internships.
All interns will be expected to commit 6 hours per week (paid at casual rate), primarily during University term‑time for 20 weeks, or up to a maximum of 120 total hours.
Travel for in‑person events and activities may be required for certain internships.
Responsibilities
- Work with staff from both the Science Faculty and the Volunteering Team to facilitate, develop and deliver science engagement activities and schemes with local schools, colleges and community groups.
- Collaborate with Engagement teams to lead on the advertisement and publicising of schemes and activities to schools/community groups in the local area.
- Conduct research and evaluation for specific schemes to measure impact and determine areas to assist in the adaptation and redevelopment of programme resources and content based on audience insights.
- Assist with project administration, marketing, recruitment, event coordination and resource development.
- Lead on projects for coordinating the recruitment of student volunteers to form a Science Engagement delivery team.
- Report on internship progress to line managers, supervisors and donors.
Qualifications
- Currently studying an undergraduate STEM degree at Durham University.
- Convey a genuine enthusiasm for community engagement.
- Experience acting as a role model for your course of study, college and University.
- Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills, enabling effective communication with a wide range of individuals.
- Strong organisation and time management skills, demonstrating your ability to work to deadlines.
- Able to work as part of a team and independently, and the ability to take initiative and be receptive to new ideas.
- Excellent IT skills in Microsoft Office, particularly in Word and Excel.
- Prior involvement with science outreach or engagement‑related work is desirable.
