The Wardens work proactively to improve student-community relations and make Durham a considerate, safer, and more sustainable place to live. These are casual positions with flexible working arrangements, typically 5 hours per week during term time, with additional discretionary hours during busier periods.
Responsibilities
- Provide advice and guidance to students living in privately rented properties on how to be good neighbours, including managing noise levels, disposing of waste, recycling, and positive citizenship.
- Monitor designated areas and support the resolution of local environmental and community issues.
- Work with colleagues and external agencies, including the Student’s Union and local community partners, to signpost students to appropriate services.
- Assist in running campaigns in line with the student life cycle and campaign calendar, promoting initiatives such as the Green Move Out scheme.
- Develop and support proactive termly community projects and communications (website, social media, leaflets).
- Attend meetings with students, representatives, and community partners, and represent the University in compliance with policies, procedures and protocols.
- Contribute to the overall development of the Warden Scheme and related initiatives.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties assigned by the Line Manager.
Qualifications
- Must be a current student at Durham University.
- Experience in a customer-facing or representative role.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, fluent in English.
- Genuine interest in improving community relations, proactive nature and initiative.
- Self-motivated, self-reliant, able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Independent and a team player with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Flexible and willing to work occasional evenings and weekends.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and IT literate.
- Experience of volunteering or helping others, working with students or young people, running or working on campaigns.
- Knowledge of the Durham area, key issues affecting students and the environment.
- Experience in developing and implementing communication plans and delivering information and advice.
