This role is open to Durham University Master of Data Science graduands/graduates only. The role will involve assisting with induction and welcome activities for incoming students on the Master of Data Science programmes in 2026-2027. This will include planning and taking part in events during induction week and being a point of contact for queries about the course and life in Durham. Duties will also include assisting the MDS team in undertaking administration duties related to induction of the incoming students when required.
Hours: Expected 8 per week for 3 weeks (induction week, teaching week 1 and teaching week 2 – The days and times of work are negotiable, flexible availability during induction week is required (w/c 28th September 2026).
The below role descriptor seeks to capture the main requirements of the role consistently, providing a summary of the key duties of the flexible role to help in setting expectations. They are not intended to cover all duties which may be required.
Role Main Responsibilities
- Assisting with the planning and delivery of induction activities
- Assisting with communications with new students arriving in Durham both induction week and for international students arriving up to end of October
- Promoting completion and collating responses from questionnaires
- Providing information to incoming students both in person (drop-in sessions) and by email/social media.
- Any other tasks as deemed appropriate
Requirements:
- Recent MDS graduand/graduate (have studied an MDS programme in 2025-26)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness/ability to work on campus in Durham
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and on own initiative and the confidence to seek advice from others when required
- Good organisation skills
