The Department of Theology and Religion would like to invite applications from postgraduate research students who have upgraded to doctoral status (or expect to have done so by 01 October 2025) and who will be in their second, third or fourth year in 2025/26 or part-time teachers who are no longer a registered student and have prior experience of teaching within the department. It is expected that teaching may be available, within the following modules at Level 1:
- THEO1131 Worldview, Faith and Identity
- THEO1171 Introduction to the History of Christianity
- THEO1191 Introduction to ChristianTheology
Teaching Assistants work closely with the respective Module Convenors by planning, preparing and leading seminars. Some module convenors will also require that you attend weekly lectures. This is an excellent opportunity to develop important skills in teaching, leading discussions and preparing sessions. It is possible to assist in more than one module or to take more than one seminar group for the same module. However, the University recommends that full-time students work no more than 15 hours per week. Please see the University guidance on student employment.
The rate of pay is £16.92 to £18.75 per hour (Grade 6 spine point 22-26, dependent upon the number of years experience of teaching already undertaken in the department).
You will be paid for the seminar contact time, plus the preparation time (per different session) and the repeat preparation time, as outlined in the HR guidance for calculating academic teaching related pay. Pleaes note that no office time will be paid for this role.
Training
Part-time teaching assistants who are new to teaching are required to attend the training modules offered by Durham Centre for Academic Development (DCAD). It is also mandatory that you complete the necessary University required learning courses. All Teaching Assistants will be required to attend the mandatory department training session scheduled at the start of the academic year.

- Students who are studying at Durham on a Tier 4 visa must confirm in their application, the number of hours already committed to work per week, within Durham University or for other employers.
Applications will be considered by the Director of Education in consultation with Module Leaders and relevant supervisors. Please note that any allocation of work awarded is only preliminary until student numbers are confirmed in October after registration. The outcome of applications will normally be communicated by mid September 2025.

Under instruction and following appropriate training:
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the subject area
Plan, prepare, and teach courses as specified by the relevant department
Maintain class registers and monitor attendance
Provide and update syllabus materials
Assist with curriculum development and the production of L&T materials
Undertake formative marking according to published criteria
Provide oral and/or written feedback to students as per departmental requirements

Person Specification
- Second, third or fourth year PhD student within the Department of Theology and Religion
- Experience of undertaking teaching previously for the department
- Good communication and social skills
- Some experience in chosen module (desirable) or willingness to acquire it within short time (essential)
- Willingness to work in close collaboration with Module Convenors and to follow guidance by them
- Initiative and ability to work and prepare independently
- Willingness to attend and complete the necessary training courses for the role
- Willingness to get feedback, to learn and develop (the department arranges annual observations by a member of staff as well as student feedback)
