The Department of Biosciences at Durham University seeks to appoint an outstanding candidate to the role of Associate Professor or Professor in the broad field of ecological modelling. This post is funded by Durham University's strategic Heritage360 initiative, which aims to bring together research on natural and cultural history and heritage.

Heritage360 is a new and exciting research platform funded through Durham University's Strategic Research Fund. Dedicated to holistic approaches to heritage, and in particular to drawing together research on natural and cultural heritage, Heritage 360 will have senior posts in six academic departments (Archaeology, Biosciences, Chemistry, Geography, History, Modern Languages and Cultures). Applicants that can apply ecological modelling across both historical and future timescales and scenarios are particularly encouraged.

Successful postholders will be Bioscience department based (likely sitting in a new Computational Ecology workspace) and, for the four-year duration of the initiative, will be focused primarily on research, with teaching by agreement with department and Strategic Research Fund management.

The Department of Biosciences is currently ranked in the top 4 UK Biology Departments in University league tables (3rd in The Complete University Guide, 4th in the Guardian University Guide) and has a 100% internationally recognised research environment (REF2021). The Department holds an Athena SWAN Silver award and embraces excellence in all of its forms and invites all qualified applicants to apply. We particularly welcome applications from candidates who are under-represented groups in the academic sector.

Successful postholder will be expected to bring leadership across disciplines, departments, and faculties, working to enhance existing areas of excellence in both heritage and ecological research, and to bring innovative approaches and vision for the field. External grant capture is key part of the scheme and candidates will be expected to have a track-record in this arena, and to have well-advanced plans for applications.

Successful candidates must demonstrate a commitment to working in the transdisciplinary environment of the Heritage360 programme whilst meeting the person specifications required for an Associate/Full Professor in Biosciences.

This post offers an exciting opportunity to make a major contribution to the development of internationally excellent research and teaching, whilst allowing unrivalled opportunities to progress and embed your career in an exciting and progressive institution.
