We have an exciting opportunity in the Department of Earth Sciences at Durham University to appoint an Assistant or Associate Professor (Research and Education) in Earth Sciences to help strengthen our existing international teaching, research and impact.

You will spend up to 180 days a year delivering undergraduate courses in teaching blocks at our new overseas partnership in China. This will offer an exciting opportunity for you to build a high-profile international teaching and research career while also taking advantage of unrivalled opportunities to progress and embed your career in your home institute at Durham.

You will have outstanding research abilities that complement our existing strengths which include:

  • Natural hazards and Earth surface processes (earthquakes, volcanic systems, sediment gravity flows and their impacts)
  • Climate, environment and geo-resources (environmental change, biogeochemical cycles, critical resources and the energy transition)
  • The physics and chemistry of Earth and planetary interiors, spanning tectonics, magmatism and mantle dynamics

You will be expected and supported to conduct cutting‐edge research at the highest level, build your own externally funded research group, collaborate widely within and beyond the department and to explore the full potential of the impact of your research. Your work will contribute to research and impact themes in the Department, the Science Faculty and across the University, including cross‐disciplinary and collaborative vehicles such as the Durham Energy Institute and the Institute for Hazard, Risk and Resilience.

Interviews will take place in two stages with a virtual interview in May and a final in‐person interview in July and successful applicants will, ideally, be in post on or before 1st January 2027.
