Overview

Enhanced Teaching Assistant (SEN) – Grade 6 £28,142 – £31,022 pro-rata • Permanent • Part Time, Term Time only + 2 weeks – please see advert text • Required from 3 November 2025 or as soon as possible after this date

The Governors are seeking to appoint 3 highly motivated, committed and experienced Enhanced Teaching Assistants who will play a key role in providing support for pupils with special educational needs. The successful candidates will support the Class Teacher in the teaching and welfare of pupils including administration of medication and leading lessons in the absence of the Class Teacher.

Posts

  • 13 hours per week (Monday/Tuesday)
  • 13 hours per week (Thursday/Friday)
  • 6.5 hours per week (Friday)

What we are looking for

  • Has experience in caring for children with special educational needs
  • Demonstrates excellent behaviour management skills
  • Is able to work as a part of a team, learning with and from other colleagues
  • Enjoys working independently and with initiative
  • Is able to work effectively with children either individually and in small groups to enable them to achieve their best
  • Is highly organised and has good time management skills
  • Is flexible, proactive and resourceful
  • Demonstrates good English and Mathematics skills (GCSE Grade 9-4 (old grade A-C) or equivalent/higher)
  • Has excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Understands confidentiality and safeguarding procedures

Only fully completed Durham County Council Support Staff Application forms will be accepted and must be returned by no later than 9.00am on Monday 22 September 2025. Interviews will be held across the 6th and 7th October 2025.

Salary and leave

  1. Calculation of term time only plus two weeks’ pay is described below.
  2. Term time only plus two additional weeks’ pay is calculated on the basis of the following:
  3. Number of ‘teaching’ weeks – 38 weeks
  4. Public (bank) holidays – 1.6 weeks (8 days)
  5. Two additional weeks, inclusive of CPD – 2 weeks
  6. Individual leave entitlement – 5.4 weeks (27 days) or 6.4 weeks (32 days). Individual leave entitlement is calculated on the length of continuous service. Employees with less than 5 years’ service will receive 27 days annual leave. Employees with more than 5 years’ service will receive 32 days annual leave.
  7. Examples: Calculation for employees with less than 5 years’ service: 40 weeks (term time plus 2) + 27 days (annual leave) + 8 days (public holidays) = 47 weeks’ pay, to be paid in 12 equal monthly instalments
  8. Calculation for employees with more than 5 years’ service: 40 weeks (term time plus 2) + 32 days (annual leave) + 8 days (public holidays) = 48 weeks’ pay, to be paid in 12 equal monthly instalments
