Durham Cathedral is seeking to appoint a Director of Development, to play a major and significant role leading the Cathedral’s fundraising activities. We are planning exciting projects as part of our new Vision & Strategy designed to further our mission to offer every person the opportunity to encounter God, and through their fundraising work, the incoming Director of Development will play a key part in enabling those projects to fulfil their missional potential.

The following is a summary of the principal duties, but is non-exhaustive:

  • Plan, develop, and lead delivery of Durham Cathedral’s fundraising activity, to support the Cathedral’s mission, vision and strategy.
  • Oversee research to identify potential sources of funding for the Cathedral, including new opportunities, creating a pipeline of income in future years.
  • Build a network of donors and other stakeholders including at the most senior levels between the Cathedral and its friends and potential supporters.
  • Negotiate major gifts on behalf of the Cathedral, both personally and with the support of senior staff.
  • Ensure the Cathedral provides excellent donor stewardship, including with members of the worshipping community.
  • Work collaboratively with the Friends of Durham Cathedral, the Durham Cathedral Choir Association and any other supporting charities/groups to ensure a joined up approach to all fundraising for the Cathedral.
  • Provide leadership to the Development department, ensuring effective and compliant fundraising systems and processes, and strong financial management.
  • Represent Durham Cathedral within Durham’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, as a member of the Coordinating Committee.
  • Act as a key senior member of the Durham Cathedral Executive Leadership Team, and as such to play an active role in maintaining and promoting the existing positive culture of Durham Cathedral, acting as an ambassador internally and externally.
