The School Nurse plays a key role in promoting the health, safety and wellbeing of students within the school community. Working part time as part of a shared nursing provision, the postholder delivers high-quality clinical care, provides professional guidance and supports students with both routine and urgent medical needs. Working closely with the Pastoral Team, Safeguarding Leads and relevant members of Senior Leadership, the School Nurse ensures that all health processes are efficient, compliant and aligned with best practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Clinical Care & Student Support: Provide high-quality nursing care to students, including assessing illness or injury and determining appropriate treatment or next steps. Deliver first aid and manage medical emergencies calmly and effectively. Support students with ongoing health conditions (e.g. asthma, diabetes, allergies) ensuring individual healthcare plans are in place and up to date. Administer medications safely in line with school policies and legal requirements. Offer confidential advice and support on physical health, emotional wellbeing and healthy living.
- Health Management & Compliance: Maintain accurate, confidential medical records and ensure data is securely managed. Ensure all medical and first-aid procedures comply with statutory guidance and best practice for schools. Monitor and review health-related risk assessments and care plans. Ensure the medical room and equipment are well maintained, stocked and compliant with health regulations.
- Pastoral & Safeguarding Support: Work closely with the Pastoral Team, SEND team, Safeguarding Leads and relevant SLT members on matters relating to student welfare. Identify potential safeguarding concerns and follow safeguarding procedures promptly and appropriately. Contribute to the development of a supportive and caring school environment. Work collaboratively with the job share nursing partner to ensure continuity of care, consistent standards and clear communication. Maintain thorough handovers, shared documentation and aligned approaches to care. Provide guidance and training to staff regarding health protocols and first aid, as required. Support the delivery of health and wellbeing education, workshops or awareness campaigns. Promote positive health behaviours amongst students and staff. Contribute to whole-school initiatives that enhance wellbeing and student resilience.
Person Specification
- Registered Nurse (NMC) with current professional registration.
- Experience in paediatrics, A&E, school nursing or another relevant clinical area (desirable).
- Up-to-date first-aid training relevant to an educational setting, or willingness to undertake school-required first-aid training.
- Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to build trust with young people.
- Confident in managing medical incidents and emergencies.
- Strong organisational skills with meticulous attention to record keeping.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold professional boundaries.
- Strong IT skills for managing electronic medical records.
