The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences is seeking a Research Associate, under the guidance of Professor Nick Turner, to work on a BBSRC‑funded project exploring the development of microscopy assays for recognition of extracellular vesicles. The role will involve advancing molecular imprinting techniques and targeted recognition polymers at the biological interface, in collaboration with MetaguideX, Oxford Nanoimaging, and the Central Laser Facility at Harwell.

Responsibilities

  • Work across the University’s facilities and with external collaborators to ensure project progress adheres to programme timescales.
  • Represent the University and the Turner group at conferences.
  • Design, develop and synthesise molecularly imprinted polymer films and nanomaterials selective for surface protein targets.
  • Perform affinity and selectivity studies on developed MIPs towards optimisation of MIP/EV interactions using suitable analytical equipment.
  • Conduct binding studies of MIP/EV interactions using suitable microscopy equipment.
  • Develop attachment strategies for MIPs to STORM microscopy slides.
  • Perform microscopy assay development as required.
  • Disseminate research results through verbal and written communication at internal and external meetings.
  • Promote knowledge and technology exchange when required.
  • Comply with the University’s Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities and Computing policies.
  • Make a full and active contribution to the principles of the ‘Sheffield Academic’ and embed the University sustainability strategy into your working activities where possible.
  • Perform any other duties commensurate with the post.

Qualifications

  • Hold a good first degree in biochemistry, chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacy, or a related field.
  • Have or be about to obtain a doctoral level qualification (PhD) in a related subject.
  • Experience with a range of microscopy techniques (confocal/electron microscopy).
  • Experience with bioanalytical techniques to analyse MIP performance.
  • Experience working with biological targets and samples (cells, EVs).
  • Experience with cell assays.
  • Experience with molecular imprinting.
  • Excellent problem‑solving and analytical skills, with a logical and rigorous approach to work.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both as part of a team and independently.
  • Well‑developed self‑management skills with the ability to prioritise work and deliver results on a schedule.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, able to convey complex ideas to scientific and non‑scientific audiences.
