Overview
The role is to ensure that the Fire systems and equipment on the University estate are maintained effectively, sound, safe and legally compliant and that policies, procedures and standards for planned maintenance and inspection are understood and implemented effectively. To assist and support the day to day maintenance activities across the University estate, liaising and working with colleagues on estate wide compliance activities.
Main duties and responsibilities:
- Responsible for fire systems planned works across campus to assist with the effective operation of the E&M Department.
- Manage the development, implementation and management of the external subcontractor maintenance contracts and programmes for the fire systems.
- Manage a team of University technical staff and contractors, inspecting works to ensure they are carried out to specification, programme and budget.
- Manage and ensure statutory maintenance is managed in a timely manner e.g. fire alarms, fire dampers, fire extinguishers etc ensuring comprehensive records are maintained.
- Prioritising requests for reactive and planned maintenance from Helpdesk and other sources by contacting the relevant departments to agree specific works.
- Issuing instructions for maintenance works to be carried out in a timely, cost-efficient manner by either University staff or external contractors, ensuring works comply with current legislation, Health & Safety codes of practice and University standard procedures.
- Carrying out maintenance project works, identifying the requirements of departments and preparing a design brief.
- Preparing designs for minor works including specification and tender documents according to University and departmental standard procedures and specifications, current legislation and health & safety codes of practice. Issuing tenders and subsequent orders.
- Preparing and maintaining a programme of work.
- Supervising works to ensure conformance to specification, programme and budget. Commissioning completed installations, management of defects.
- Processing orders, invoices and other documentation, ensuring value for money and that budgetary control, University and departmental procedures are maintained.
- Maintaining records on maintenance activities and items subject to statutory legislation and inspection.
- Liaison with relevant staff to maintain effective communication to facilitate the work of the departments.
- Assist in the running and development of the University’s maintenance management system, attending training courses for updates.
- Assist in the running of the Planned Preventative Maintenance systems formulating working instructions for designated work areas.
- Maintenance and development of Planned Preventative Maintenance programmes for all mechanical systems including items subject to statutory inspection.
- Member of the department on-call manager team as required.
- Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

Criteria:
- Have a good honours degree in Engineering or a similar discipline (or equivalent experience).
- Knowledge of relevant systems, policies, legislation and quality standards.
- Experience of managing and motivating a team of staff. Demonstrable experience of executing people processes as required.
- Excellent customer service skills to ensure an effective and efficient service delivery.
- Experience of reviewing individual and team progress and performance and embedding organisational strategy into individual performance planning.
- Ability to develop creative approaches to problem solving.
- Familiar with and experienced in the use of administrative software packages for example, the Microsoft Office Suite especially intermediate to advanced level Excel.
- An accredited HSE Qualification (IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent).
- Technical Professional Registration or the willingness to work towards it.
- Experience of developing and maintaining a network of contacts throughout own work area.
- Competent in the use of maintenance management software i.e; Planon, CAFMFMX, Concept.

Grade G7 £38,784 - £47,389 (per annum with potential to progress to £51,753 per annum through sustained contribution)
