As a key member of the management team, the Financial Controller will play a vital part in supporting the Chamber’s mission to develop and grow the local business community. The role involves managing all aspects of financial administration, budgeting, and reporting, ensuring that the organisation operates in a financially sound and transparent manner. Working closely with colleagues and stakeholders, you will help to safeguard the Chamber’s assets and provide accurate financial information to support business planning and operational delivery.
Primary Responsibilities and targets
- Oversee all day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports
- Manage and monitor cash flow, forecasting and budgeting processes
- Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, including VAT, PAYE, and annual returns
- Lead on the annual audit process and liaise with external auditors
- Maintain and improve internal financial controls and procedures
- Support procurement activities and monitor contract spend
- Assist with the preparation of grant applications and financial reports for funders
Strategic Support
- Provide financial analysis and advice to the CEO and Board to inform strategic decision‑making
- Work with the management team to develop financial plans in line with business objectives
- Contribute to the development and review of financial policies and procedures
Team Responsibilities
- Collaborate with colleagues across departments to ensure financial information is accurate and timely
- Support wider organisational activities, including event budgeting and financial reporting for projects
- Build rapport with partner organisations and external stakeholders, including banks and auditors
- Uphold the Chamber’s vision, aims, and objectives, acting as an ambassador for sound financial practice
- Work with the Chief Executive and the rest of the team to achieve business plan targets approved by the Board of Directors
Essential Experience & Skills
- Professional accounting qualification (e.g. ACCA, CIMA, ACA) or equivalent experience
- Minimum of three years’ experience in a financial management or accounting role
- Proven track record of preparing financial statements, budgets, and management reports
- Excellent knowledge of accounting software (e.g. Xero, Sage, QuickBooks) and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to communicate complex financial information to non‑financial audiences
- Experience of statutory compliance and financial regulations (VAT, PAYE, Companies House etc.)
- Self‑starter with an ability to prioritise workload and meet tight deadlines
- Flexible approach to working hours
- Confidential and discreet, with a professional manner
- Good team player, able to work collaboratively across the organisation
