The Public Law team handles both publicly and privately funded work, including civil liberties, judicial review claims, and immigration matters.
Main Responsibilities of the Role
- Report directly to the Department Director
- Responsible for all aspects of Public Law work, providing technical expertise and guidance to team members
- Manage and supervise Solicitors, Trainee Solicitors and Caseworkers, ensuring appropriate caseloads and complexities
- Assist with delivery of training and development within the department
- Handle a range of Public Law matters including unlawful detention, false imprisonment, abuse by detention staff, removal notices, NHS & local authority challenges, and immigration tribunal decisions
- Prepare and manage funding applications to the Legal Aid Agency
- Draft documents such as witness statements, evidence, application forms, indexes of documents and letters of representation
- Attend conferences and court proceedings
- Maintain a professional, pro‑active approach with strong client care skills and interest in business development and marketing
Key Skills Required
- Valid Practising Certificate at the time of applying
- Commitment to providing an excellent standard of service to clients
- Team‑player with a positive, supportive culture and ability to cross‑refer within the firm
- Previous supervisory experience and achievement of key performance indicators
- Excellent client care skills, especially with vulnerable clients and complex public law cases
- Strong networking and communication skills for business development and new‑business generation
- Working knowledge of the Legal Aid Guidance for Public Law matters and ability to service privately funded cases
- Extensive experience in all Public Law work (advocacy and non‑advocacy)
- Advance IT skills – familiarity with Microsoft Office and document management
