An outstanding opportunity for an enthusiastic arboriculturist or landscape architect to join our Development Management team as a dedicated Tree Officer to support the reinstatement of vital services for our customers, help protect and safeguard the important trees within our communities and guide new development in our towns, villages and rural areas. If you are looking for a new challenge then this could be the perfect place for your next step. These are vibrant times in the beautiful south west of Scotland with innovative projects and regeneration initiatives attracting significant investment and interest to our region. To ensure that our Development Management team plays its part in supporting sustainable growth and protecting our rich natural and built environment, we have restructured the Service to include this new post.

As a Tree Officer you will be required to carry out a full range of work in relation to the assessment of trees for planning purposes, including processing of requests for Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) and applications for works to protected trees, responding to planning consultations regarding trees potentially affected by development proposals and assisting with the preparation of planning guidance in relation to trees and development. Work will include visiting sites and inspecting trees, communicating with applicants, agents and third parties, providing advice to the public, liaising with other Council services, carrying out assessments and preparing reports as well as work in relation to enforcement and appeals.

You must have a relevant degree and experience of working with planning related tree matters, preferably in a Scottish rural area, with a good working knowledge of current planning legislation and procedures relating to trees. You will have a customer-focused attitude and be a skilled negotiator, with a good standard of written and spoken English. You must be able to prioritise and work to deadlines with the minimum of supervision and work well as part of a team. A current driving licence is essential.
