Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Transport & Infrastructure service are looking to recruit a Principal Technician Engineering to work within the Engineering Design Team. Based at Cargen Tower, Dumfries you will assist and provide support, including the supervision and training of technical staff, to Senior Officers in the delivery of various infrastructure projects as part of the Engineering Design service. These projects will include roads, bridges, cycleways, car parks, flood protection, harbours and coastal protection works.
Working as part of a team of engineers and technicians, this position would suit an enthusiastic, committed and self-motivated individual who would relish the opportunity to help project manage infrastructure schemes from design through to construction. A minimum qualification to HNC or HND level in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) is essential. Additional qualification to EngTech or I Eng level are desirable.
You should have a proven track record in the fields of civil engineering design and construction and have developed a good knowledge and experience in relevant disciplines. Ideally you will have experience in carrying out topographical surveys using total station and GPS systems, use of AutoCAD and in the preparation of Bills of Quantities. A good understanding and experience of the preparation of major works contracts (NEC Engineering and Construction Contract) and project management is desirable.
You should have experience in the design of roads or simple structures and ability to assist in the design of complex structures using computer aided design packages, engineering principles, codes, standards and specifications are required. A good knowledge of the environmental legislation considering best practice and sustainability would be beneficial. Experience of working in an office environment is essential and you must be computer literate with a good working knowledge of MS Office applications.

- You must be flexible, self-motivated, able to work under pressure to deadlines, possess good organisational skills and have the confidence to deal with staff, the public and contractors.
- You should be a team player with good oral/written communication skills.
- A current full driving licence is essential.
- An understanding and knowledge of current Health & Safety legislation in particular CDM Regulations, Quality Management Systems and Local Government working are essential.
This permanent full-time position will be based on a blended approach working at our Cargen Tower office in Dumfries alongside an element of working from home dependent on the workload demands at the time.
