This post presents an exciting opportunity to work as part of the Active Schools and Community Sport team within the Education, Skills and Community Wellbeing Directorate on a fixed term basis until March 2027 in line with the summer of sport investment.
The role involves working directly with young people, including those who are care experienced, in partnership with schools and community organisations across Dumfries. The postholder will develop and coordinate inclusive sport and physical activity opportunities before school, during lunchtime, after school and within the wider community, with the aim of improving young people’s engagement in education, attendance, confidence and overall wellbeing.
The role will also provide targeted one-to-one support for identified young people, using sport and physical activity as a positive intervention to build relationships, improve emotional wellbeing, develop confidence and resilience and supporter-engagement with school and learning.
Applicants must be educated to degree level or equivalent and have experience working at a similar level in Leisure and Sport, Education, Health or an appropriate field.
You will be able to demonstrate the following experience, skills and personality factors:
- Ability to prioritise tasks, meet deadlines and work on own initiative together with the ability to organise and co-ordinate physical activity programmes
- Possess personal motivation, which inspires a strong commitment to working towards the concept of School and Community Sport.
- Knowledge and understanding of the aims of School and Community Sport pathways.
- Experience of engaging with the community through sport and physical activity
- Experience of applying trauma informed practice and creating inclusive, supportive environments for children, young people and communities
- Marketing, promotion and event management
- Performance and project management experience
- Knowledge of health and safety
- Ability to engage with key partners and maintain good working relationships
- Ability to work as a team member and have strong influencing and negotiating skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
This post is considered as Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. From 28 February 2011, preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG scheme update check prior to formal offer of employment being made by Dumfries and Galloway Council.
