Are you looking for a career where you can earn, learn, and make a real difference? Our Roads Service is offering two 4-year apprenticeships, giving you the chance to gain hands-on experience while working towards a fully supported Civil Engineering qualification (HNC or BSc). From day one, you’ll play a part in maintaining and improving the roads that keep communities moving.

This role is suited to people who are practical, and motivated to build a long-term career. You don’t need prior experience, but you should have an interest in engineering or construction, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

As an apprentice, you will benefit from a strong package that supports both your development and future career:

  • Competitive starting salary of £25,791+, rising as you progress, provided training milestones are complete.
  • Fully funded Civil Engineering qualification (HNC or BSc)
  • Hands-on experience working on real projects
  • A clear pathway into a long-term engineering career

If you are successful your time will be split between site work, office-based tasks, and study, giving you a well-rounded experience. Depending on the apprenticeship pathway, you will develop skills in one of the following areas:

Position 1 - Roads Maintenance Apprentice

You will support the maintenance and improvement of the road network, ensuring that roads remain safe and functional for the community. Typical activities include:

  • Collecting and recording key condition data
  • Supporting maintenance and resurfacing programmes
  • Assisting engineers with live site works and projects
  • Contributing to the planning and delivery of repair works

You may be based in Dumfries, Lockerbie, Castle Douglas, Stranraer, or Newton Stewart.

Position 2 - Roads, Safety and Development Apprentice

  • Assisting with road safety assessments and initiatives
  • Supporting traffic management planning and improvements
  • Contributing to development planning and consultation processes
  • Collecting and analysing data to inform transport decisions
  • Supporting projects that enhance network safety and efficiency

You will be based in Dumfries.

  • National 5 qualifications including Maths
  • Basic IT skills and the ability to study alongside work
  • Motivation, reliability, and a willingness to learn
