Casual Expedition Co-Ordinator Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) Expeditions Dumfries & Galloway
£17.30 per hour
Do you love being in the hills and outdoors? Want to use your skills to help young people achieve something amazing? We are looking for experienced, enthusiastic Expedition Leaders to support the delivery of Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expeditions across Dumfries & Galloway. This is a fantastic opportunity for qualified hillwalkers and outdoor leaders who enjoy working with young people and want flexible, rewarding work in some of Scotland’s best landscapes.
About the role
- Expeditions typically take place in local hills and moorland areas across Dumfries & Galloway, with some travel required.
- Lead and supervise groups of young people on DofE training and qualifying expeditions.
- Support participants to develop navigation, campcraft, teamwork and resilience skills.
- Ensure safety and wellbeing in hill, moorland and remote environments.
- Assess groups in line with DofE expedition requirements.
- Act as a positive role model, encouraging confidence, independence and achievement.
- Work flexibly across evenings, weekends and occasional weekdays during peak seasons.
Requirements Who we’re looking for
- Experienced hillwalkers or outdoor leaders.
- Confident managing groups in remote environments.
- Calm, organised and safety focused.
- Supportive and encouraging with young people.
- Reliable, adaptable and happy working outdoors in all weathers.
Essential
- Relevant hillwalking leadership qualification (e.g. Hill & Moorland Leader, Mountain Leader, DofE Expedition Skills (DES) equivalent).
- Outdoor first aid qualification (we can put you through this if you do not have it).
- Experience leading groups in the outdoors.
- Ability to work flexibly including weekends and overnight expeditions.
- Driving licence.
A current driving licence is an essential requirement of this post. However, if you have a disability which precludes you from holding a driving licence consideration will be given if alternative transport can be arranged.
PVG/Disclosure (or willingness to obtain)
This post is considered as Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. From 28 February 2011, preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG scheme update check prior to formal offer of employment being made by Dumfries and Galloway Council.
Applicants who have been resident outside the UK within the last 5 years, if offered a position, in addition to a Disclosure Scotland Check, will be required to provide a completed police record check from the police authority in the country or countries in which they were resident.
