Nuclear Engineer I or II (Mechanical Design) – Brunswick Nuclear Plant
Summary
This is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this entry level solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. They have knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures. They will develop Mechanical engineering specific solutions in support of design packages for plant equipment upgrade projects; including but not limited to scoping and development of design packages for plant modifications; HVAC, piping design, heat exchanger evaluations and Hydraulic piping/tubing design and modifications, mechanical equipment evaluations and independent reviews of peer prepared engineering products.
Responsibilities
- Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.
- Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches associated with the resolution of technical problems.
- Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.
- Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures.
- Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
- Supports the company\’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
Basic/Required Qualifications:
Nuclear Engineer I
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- A Master \’s degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
- 0-2 years of engineering experience.
Nuclear Engineer II
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- A Master \’s degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
- 2-4 years of engineering experience.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- Background hydraulic analysis, HVAC, pipe stress analysis with a willingness to perform/learn ASME B31.1 and ASME Section III pipe stress analysis.
- Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
- Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
- Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
- Experience in the utility industry.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam and desire to complete PE license.
- Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles
- Must be able to work in a team environment.
Specific Requirements
- Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
- In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
- Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.
- Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.
- This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
- Occasional overnight travel.
Working Conditions
- Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
