This role supports the development, testing, and validation of manufacturing components and processes. The role involves setting up and supporting testing activities, contributing to design changes, carrying out inspections, and applying engineering problem‑solving to improve quality, cost, and performance.

Salary: £15,392 to £24,454.04, depending on your age.

Hours: Monday to Thursday, 08:15 – 16:45 and Friday, 08:15 – 13:15 (37 hours a week).

Start date: Tuesday 1 September 2026.

Programme duration: 3 years 5 months.

Responsibilities

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands‑on experience.

  • Support the setup, planning, and execution of component testing activities.
  • Assist with managing engineering design changes and maintaining associated documentation.
  • Carry out inspections and basic measurements to support component development and validation.
  • Contribute to root cause analysis and recommend improvements to address quality or process issues.
  • Ensure all testing and production activities comply with health, safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Operate basic production machinery and tools safely and in line with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Work closely with cross‑functional teams, including Design, Manufacturing, and Quality.
  • Identify and report maintenance or calibration issues in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and well‑organised work area.
  • Support team‑based improvement activities, including quality improvements and cost reduction initiatives.

Engineering manufacturing technician (Level 4)

Training course details

  • Read and extract relevant engineering and manufacturing related data and information (such as workplans or project plans, schedules, drawings, specifications, production data, quality reports, costing data, statistical information) drawing accurate conclusions and making informed decisions.
  • Use project management tools such as SWOT, stakeholder matrices, risk mapping, radar chart and summary risk profiles.
  • Use problem‑solving tools such as root cause analysis (RCA), PFMEA, fishbone, practical problem solving (PPS) and advanced product quality planning (APQP).
  • Analyse and interpret data and information to generate manufacturing engineering documentation such as parts per million (PPM) quality adherence, cost analysis and test data.
  • Communicate using the appropriate method for the audience such as formal and informal presentations, written reports, verbal, electronic, social media, incorporating relevant and appropriate data or metrics.
  • Use the approved process and quality compliance procedure to create or amend engineering or manufacturing documentation.
  • Use lean tools and techniques such as Six Sigma, 8 wastes, workplace organisation such as 5S, kaizen and poka‑yoke (error proofing).
  • Apply documentation control processes and procedures such as format, location, access and authorisation.
  • Use financial planning, recording and review processes and documentation such as departmental budgets, estimating, cost control, cost forecasting, and investment appraisal.
  • Use computer‑based software systems or packages such as CAD, data analytics and databases.
  • Attend a day per week in term time at Advance 1 Campus, Dudley College, DY1 4AD.
  • Upon successful completion, obtain Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technician (mechanical) HNC Apprenticeship qualification.
  • Receive a site assessor visit every 6‑8 weeks to support training.

Requirements

  • GCSE in English (grade C/4/Level 2 Functional Skills).
  • Level 3 in Engineering, Maths & Science; A Levels – share if applicable.

Other requirements

Must be able to commute to Stourport and Dudley College for day release.
