Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the following position: Assistant Professor in Intellectual Disability Nursing at the School of Nursing, Psychotherapy & Community Health, Faculty of Science & Health. This is a Permanent (with PhD) / 5 year Fixed Term Contract (with Masters) with potential for permanency thereafter.

Our multi-disciplinary and multi-professional School has gained national and international recognition for its diverse range of innovative undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional development programmes across Nursing, Psychotherapy and Community Health.
Role Profile: The successful candidate will be expected to conduct teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and modules related to intellectual disability nursing through research-led teaching, student mentoring and support, and supervision of student projects and research. The successful candidate will also be expected to support programme administration, clinical placements, research supervision and service and external engagement activities of the School and University. The post is based on the Glasnevin Campus and the successful candidates will report to the Head of School.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Teaching and Learning: To contribute to the teaching and learning activity of the School by coordinating and delivering modules, using a wide range of teaching and assessment methodologies, enhancing existing modules, contributing to the design and development of new modules, and providing research supervision for taught postgraduate students.
- Research and Scholarship: To contribute to the research agenda and profile of the School by having clearly articulated research interests, publishing in high impact journals, generating research income, attracting and supervising postgraduate research students, and contributing to the research culture in the School.
- Service and Contribution to the University and Society: To contribute to the leadership, management and administration of the School by engaging in relevant committees, accreditation-related activities, representing the School in marketing and student recruitment, and developing relationships with stakeholders.
Qualifications and Experience: Ideally applicants will have a PhD or equivalent in nursing or a relevant discipline. Applicants with a masters degree and substantial relevant clinical experience may be accepted for appointment to a Fixed Term five year contract. Post holders must have four years clinical experience in intellectual disability nursing in lieu of PhD. In the absence of a PhD, successful candidates will be currently undertaking or committed to undertake a sponsored PhD in a relevant field within the duration of this fixed term five year contract. Applicants must be registered or be eligible to register in the Intellectual Disability Nursing Division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). Demonstrable evidence of a strong clinical background in Intellectual Disability Nursing is required.
The successful candidate will ideally possess the following:
- Evidence of conducting research and dissemination with a track record of peer-reviewed publications.
- Evidence of contributing to funded research projects and/or attracting funding from competitive research funding schemes.
- Registration, or eligibility to register on the Nurse Tutor’s Division with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland or hold a recognised teaching and learning qualification.
The postholder will be required to undertake essential compliance training including Orientation, Health & Safety, Data Protection (GDPR), Cyber Security Awareness, and AI Literacy. Other training may need to be undertaken when required.
Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy.
Additional Information: Please note this role does not meet criteria for a Critical Skills permit as stipulated by the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Employment. DCU operates a Remote Working Policy allowing employees up to 2 days of remote working per week. Any remote working arrangement will reflect the predominant on-campus working environment.
