The School of Nursing, Psychotherapy and Community Health leads in advancing population and patient health, inclusion and well-being through education, research, practice, and policy development. Our multi-disciplinary and multi-professional School has gained national and international recognition for its diverse range of innovative undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional development programmes across Nursing, Psychotherapy and Community Health.

The School is seeking to recruit an Assistant Professor in Mental Health Nursing – permanent (with PhD) / 5 year fixed term contract (with Masters). The successful candidate will be expected to conduct teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and modules related to mental health nursing through research-led teaching, student mentoring and support, and supervision of student projects and research. The successful candidate will also be expected to support programme administration, clinical placements, research supervision and service and external engagement activities of the School and University.

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following:

  • Teaching and Learning: To contribute to the teaching and learning activity of the School by coordinating and delivering modules in a manner consistent with the highest academic standards; using a wide range of teaching and assessment methodologies which foster a deep approach to learning; working proactively to enhance and enrich existing modules and programmes; contributing to the design and development of new modules and programmes; providing research supervision for taught postgraduate students.
  • Research and Scholarship: To contribute to the research agenda and profile of the School by having clearly articulated research interests; publishing new ideas and findings in high impact international journals; achieving measurable impact via citations; generating research income; contributing to research activities such as conferences and seminars; attracting and supervising postgraduate research students; contributing to the research culture and environment in the School.
  • Service and Contribution to the University and Society: To contribute to the leadership, management and administration of the School by engaging in relevant School and University committees; actively engaging in accreditation-related activities; delivering management and school roles to a high standard; representing the School in activities such as marketing and student recruitment; developing relationships with stakeholders; engaging in external academic, enterprise, professional, public sector and community activities.

Qualifications and Experience: Ideally applicants will have a PhD or equivalent in nursing or a relevant discipline. Applicants with a masters degree with substantial relevant clinical experience may be accepted for appointment to a Fixed Term five year contract. Post holders must have four years clinical experience in mental health nursing in lieu of a PhD. In the absence of a PhD, successful candidates will be currently undertaking or be committed to undertake a sponsored PhD in a relevant field within the duration of this fixed term five year contract. Applicants must be registered or be eligible to register in the Psychiatric Nurses Division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). Demonstrable evidence of a strong clinical background in Mental Health Nursing is required.

The successful candidate will ideally possess the following:

  • Evidence of conducting research and dissemination with a track record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Evidence of contributing to funded research projects and/or attracting funding from competitive research funding schemes.
  • Registration, or eligibility to register on the Nurse Tutor’s Division with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland or hold a recognised teaching and learning qualification.

The postholder will be required to undertake essential compliance training including Orientation, Health & Safety, Data Protection (GDPR), Cyber Security Awareness, and AI Literacy. Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy.

Additional Information: Please note this role does not meet criteria for a Critical Skills permit as stipulated by the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Employment. DCU operates a Remote Working Policy allowing employees up to 2 days of remote working per week. Any remote working arrangement will be reflective of the predominant on-campus working environment.
