AI Strategy Lead – Frontier Tech Hub – London – Fixed Term – Full or Part Time
The Frontier Tech Hub is a flagship initiative within the FCDO that explores how emerging technologies—including artificial intelligence, blockchain, remote sensing, and digital identity—can be responsibly applied to solve complex global development challenges. Operating at the intersection of innovation and impact, the Hub provides technical expertise, experimentation spaces, and strategic guidance to help FCDO teams harness cutting‑edge tools in real‑world contexts. By fostering a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and ethical innovation, the Hub ensures the UK remains at the forefront of tech‑enabled development and diplomacy.

Core Pillars of Work
- Scoping Frontier Technologies through Futures Immersions and Horizon Scanning
- Testing and Developing Frontier Technologies through funding pilots to evaluate critical assumptions and supporting High Impact Strategic Investments
- Adopting Frontier Technologies through AI Opportunity Scans and running an AI Sandbox that enables hands‑on experimentation and practical demonstrations of what AI can do.
Main Responsibilities / Job Content
- Act as the Lead Coach on AI‑related pilots selected from FCDO staff calls for applications.
- Provide strategic advice on AI adoption, identify emerging AI trends and opportunities relevant to international development, and help shape organizational approaches to AI integration and capacity building.
- Design and deliver workshops with FCDO staff, delivery partners, and tech partners to identify opportunities for AI integration in policy and programme work, producing synthesis reports with actionable recommendations.
- Identify and manage AI partners and vendors to support programme delivery—including preparing terms of reference, assessing technical capabilities, developing and costing scopes of work, and overseeing partnerships to deliver AI solutions responsibly and effectively.
- Facilitate hands‑on learning experiences such as promptathons, demos, and simulations.
- Evaluate ethical and safeguarding considerations, identifying potential AI‑use risks related to ethics, inclusion, safeguarding, data protection, and responsible technology deployment.
- Provide support to other project elements as required.
- Provide thought leadership, publicly sharing learning from the programme, and contributing to Evidence and Storytelling.
Essential Skills & Experience
- AI expertise and practical application in international development, demonstrating implementation of AI solutions in development contexts with strong knowledge of tools, technologies, and relevant use cases.
- Coaching and facilitation skills with proven ability to coach teams through innovative processes and deliver engaging workshops and hands‑on learning experiences for diverse audiences.
- Agile prototyping and innovation methodologies experience, including rapid testing, iteration of AI solutions, user‑centred design, and scaling proof‑of‑concepts.
- Partnership and vendor management experience, including scope development, cost estimation, and oversight of technology output delivery and quality assurance.
- Analytical and synthesis capabilities to assess complex organisational processes and programmes, synthesising findings and producing clear, actionable recommendations for technical and non‑technical staff.
- Understanding of responsible AI principles in development, including mitigating risks related to ethics, inclusion, safeguarding, data protection, and responsible use in low‑resource or vulnerable settings.
- Stakeholder engagement across development ecosystems, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills in diverse cultural contexts.
- Project management abilities to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines and delivering high‑quality outputs in a fast‑paced environment.
