This is a senior, field-based leadership role responsible for planning, directing and continuously improving DSS's end-to-end recruitment operation. Reporting directly to the Director, you will own the full recruitment lifecycle from staffing strategy and sourcing through to assessment, placement, onboarding and retention while managing compliance, supplier relationships and pipeline performance. The role requires regular travel across London and the Midlands to meet candidates in person, attend client sites and depots, conduct in-person checks, and support operational activity on the ground.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategy & planning: Set DSS's recruitment strategy with the Director, translating client demand and growth plans into clear targets; maintain a PAYE workforce, recruiting ahead of demand to minimize gaps. Monitor the labour market and report on metrics such as time-to-fill, retention and source effectiveness.
- Sourcing & selection: Own job descriptions and candidate profiles; run targeted campaigns across Total Jobs and other channels; conduct face-to-face interviews and assessments at locations convenient to candidates; and maintain a pre-screened pipeline ready for deployment.
- Supplier management: Manage third-party recruitment suppliers, setting performance, quality and compliance expectations, reviewing delivery and escalating concerns to the Director.
- Compliance: Ensure all activity meets employment law, equal-opportunities and data-protection requirements. Carry out in-person Right to Work checks (verifying original documents), DVLA license checks for all driver placements, DBS checks and medicals, keeping the business audit-ready.
- Policy & process: Develop and maintain recruitment policies and documentation, continuously improving the process to reduce time-to-hire and raise candidate quality.
- Performance & retention: Act as first point of contact for concerns about placed workers; carry out regular face-to-face check-ins with drivers at client depots and operational sites; manage conduct matters; and identify attrition patterns to support retention.
- Brand & client relationships: Promote DSS as an employer of choice, maintain regular contact with logistics clients on their needs and candidate performance, and maintain a visible, on-site presence across both regions to strengthen relationships and support new business.
