A Day in the Life

Medtronic - Digital Technologies is creating ambitious new products that bring connectivity, real-time guidance, and decision support to the operating room. To support this mission, we are developing compact, high-performance, and embedded systems that enable edge computing and connectivity. Working closely with other teams across Medtronic, we are creating a connected ecosystem and leveraging the state of the art in computer vision to provide the most comprehensive view of surgery. As a Release Engineer, you will play a critical role in driving release deliverables, automating processes, and ensuring documentation and artifacts are prepared ahead of releases. You will be responsible for maintaining the pace of delivery, optimizing workflows, and supporting release activities with a hands-on approach. This role is ideal for someone with a software background who thrives in execution, process improvement, and scripting.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Release Deliverables Ownership
    • Drive release deliverables with relevant owners and ensure deadlines are met.
    • Maintain pace and momentum across all release activities.
  • Process Automation
    • Reduce the time required to generate release artifacts by developing and implementing automation scripts and workflows.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including QA, DevOps, and Product, to ensure smooth and efficient releases.
  • Release Preparation
    • Prepare release deliverables ahead of time by reviewing change requests and ensuring that all approvals are secured for release.
    • Ensure all necessary documentation is complete, accurate, and compliant with regulatory standards.
  • Execution During Releases
    • Manage release execution tasks, including uploading deliverables, updating documents, linking to Bill of Materials (BOM), and ensuring compliance with established processes.
  • Documentation and Process Improvement
    • Streamline release workflows by improving documentation standards and identifying opportunities for process optimization.
    • Foster collaboration across QA, DevOps, and Product teams to ensure alignment on release goals and timelines.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • 3–7 years of experience in software development, release management, or related fields, with a focus on scripting, automation, and process optimization.
  • Experience in software development or scripting, with proficiency in languages like Python, Bash, or similar.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, etc.
  • Strong attention to detail and a passion for maintaining accurate documentation and improving workflows.
  • Proven experience managing release deliverables, including preparing and executing releases, linking to BOMs, and ensuring compliance with established processes.
  • Familiarity with managing change requests and securing approvals for releases in a structured environment.
  • Ability to identify inefficiencies and implement automation solutions to improve productivity and reduce manual effort.

The ideal candidate has experience working in resource-constrained compute environments and regulated domains, particularly in medical device software development or other highly regulated industries. They are proficient with project and release management tools such as JIRA, Git, or similar platforms, and are familiar with Agile methodologies and best practices for collaborative, iterative development.

Pay range: United Kingdom: 76,800.00 GBP - 115,200.00 GBP | This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).
