The EHS Safety Specialist I is responsible for supporting the Environmental, Health, and Safety programs. The incumbent will have specific responsibility for implementation and maintenance of assigned Environmental, Health and Safety programs. Will use EHS knowledge and experience to assist site personnel in achieving EHS objectives.
Position Responsibilities
- Program Development: Assist with the development, evaluation, implementation, and administration of EHS, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, and occupational health policies and programs to meet regulatory compliance, sustain the environment, and provide a safe place to work.
- Program Implementation / Enforcement: Work with site employees and contractors, as well as departmental Behavior Based Safety (BBS) teams.
- Coaching and Mentoring: Coach and mentor employees at all levels on safe work and behaviours.
- EHS Initiatives: Assist and participate in EHS initiatives to align with project tracking and site safety performance goals.
- Safety Concerns: Proactively work to identify and communicate EHS safety concerns and assist in resolving.
- Recordkeeping / Reporting: Collect, organize, and maintain data and records for EHS permit compliance and reporting. Track and trend safety near misses, incidents, and associated actions.
- Inspections / Audits: Conduct, coordinate, and participate in EHS inspections and audits, including internal inspections, corporate, regulatory, and customer audits.
- Compliance Tasks: Complete assigned compliance calendar, corrective action, and audit finding tasks.
- Emergency Drills: Active participation on Emergency Drill and Exercise Team.
- Training: Assist in the preparation and delivery of EHS training to employees, visitors, and contractors.
- Safety Data Sheets: Maintain Safety Data Sheets as required by OSHA regulations.
- Compliance Activities: Responsibilities may include supporting PSM, RMP, Environmental, and Waste Management compliance activities.
- Continual Improvement: Actively participate in teams to drive continual improvement and employee engagement.

Position Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in a science-related field with 1-3 years direct experience in an Environmental Health and Safety role in General Industry, ideally in the chemical industry. Education may be substituted for experience with a maximum equivalency of 5 years; Bachelor of Science in EHS related role 2 years, Master of Science in EHS related role 4 years, PhD in EHS related role 5 years.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations specifically 29 CFR 1910.
- Preferred but not required, general knowledge of ISO 14001.
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment to perform EHS assessments.
- The ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency with computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheet, and slide presentations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be able to lift 25 pounds, climb ladders, bend, kneel, stoop, and walk up/down stairs without assistance.
- Must be willing to travel 10-15%.
