Overview

Opportunity to join a leading national transport and logistics business at their strategic site in the North West. Responsible for a multi-site operation across the UK. The company is expanding through strategic acquisitions and organic development and operates across industrial, FMCG, and foodstuffs sectors.

Responsibilities

  • Regulatory oversight: Design, implement, and maintain compliance systems across transport, warehousing, import/export, customs, health & safety, licensing, environmental, and data protection regulations (GDPR, CMR, TACHO, O-Licence, HSWA, AEO approvals).
  • Policy & process development: Draft and refine internal policies, compliance manuals, risk frameworks, audit schedules, and standard operating procedures.
  • Audit & assurance: Lead internal and third-party audits; monitor and report corrective actions; maintain compliance scorecards and KPIs.
  • Training & culture: Develop training programmes; cultivate a proactive compliance culture through periodic sessions, communications, and leadership briefings.
  • Incident management: Investigate compliance incidents, conduct root-cause analysis, and monitor resolution and mitigation plans; serve as the escalation point.
  • Regulatory liaison: Act as the primary contact with regulators (DVSA, HSE, ICO, Customs HMRC) and manage inspections and statutory reporting.
  • Stakeholder collaboration: Coordinate with operations, finance, HR, legal, and IT to ensure aligned and effective compliance measures.
  • Team leadership: Manage a small team (e.g., Compliance Officer/Manager, Auditors); oversee budgeting, forecasting, and performance reviews.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (Law, Business, Supply Chain, or similar); professional qualification (e.g., IIPQ, ICSA) preferred.
  • Extensive experience with at least 3 years in a senior compliance role—ideally within logistics, transport, or supply chain.
  • Strong regulatory knowledge: transport compliance (O-Licence, drivers’ hours), health & safety, customs, data protection.
  • Demonstrated success in leading audits, investigations, compliance programmes, and regulatory interfaces.
  • Leadership and interpersonal skills for effective communication across all business levels.
  • Analytical mindset and proficiency in compliance software/tools.
  • Relevant professional certifications (NEBOSH, FIATA, CILT, Tacho, GDPR) advantageous.
