To provide:
- An interface between the project and manufacturing teams, ensuring any issues that arise during manufacturing are dealt with swiftly and effectively.
- Facilitation of New Product Introduction for projects in the DDQ phase by helping to plan and execute Test & Integration activities from CDR through PRR and into production.
- Champion the new design into PRR, working with production engineer(s) to ensure an effective handover into the manufacturing team.
- Proposal and design of special-to-type test equipment and automated test equipment as required to ensure production costs and schedules are met whilst quality & reliability are maintained.
- Specifications and sourcing for all equipment and facilities needed to ensure smooth ongoing production, acting as the “go-between” for Stores/Production/Test/Engineering, to assist the PM to keep the production line running smoothly.
Reporting to: Project Manager/Hardware Team Lead
Main Responsibilities:
- POC for production: Act as the day-to-day “go-to” point of contact for production and test teams, whenever they hit a problem with the project’s equipment through production and test. This may require investigation/fault-finding, liaising with Stores to locate/release/reject kitted items, raising of paperwork such as CARs or drawing updates, and assisting QA.
- Be the PM’s “right-hand-person” for sorting out any issues with production which require engineering input. This may involve dealing with Supply Chain and external stakeholders as well as internal manufacturing teams.
- Maintain close relationships with the rest of the project engineering team and particularly the Design Authority, who has ultimate responsibility for signing off the product.
- Planning for production: The Production Engineers (PE) have a role in ensuring drawing packs are mature and that equipment is manufacturable, and will work on prototypes to ensure the design is ready for manufacture. As a Project Engineer you will work closely with the PEs to ensure all Observations are raised and then captured into the Manufacturing Data Pack prior to PRR. You should be capable of implementing minor drawing pack updates yourself, and will draw on the project design team for significant updates where help is required.
- Champion the design into the PRR, ensuring the facilities, test and ancillary equipment necessary for production is in place ready for PRR, to minimise delays getting into production.
- Post-PRR, facilitate knowledge transfer from Engineering into the Production teams. This may be by organising production handover sessions/walkthroughs, generating SOPs or whatever is the most effective method for the project.
- Post-PRR, create or collect observations and problem reports and assist the PM to bring them to a Change Control Board (CCB) or other approved mechanism, for sentencing by the DA and key stakeholders.
- New Product Introduction: If allocated to a project still in the DDQ phase, you may help to execute test and integration for the design proving phase, which will help familiarise with the product/equipment.
- Use this product knowledge along with your understanding of DG production standards to derive PAS/PTS documentation and help the project team to plan all aspects of production testing.
- Assist the PM to drive the project towards production, which includes championing the product through PRR as above, but also assisting the PM and Production Scheduler with timely and accurate Works Requisitions and Job Cards, incorporating CARs into the drawing pack to ensure a clean baseline for production wherever possible.
- Take the lead on generating designs and specifications for test equipment, including considering what level of automated test is appropriate for this project/product. Ensure the test equipment is built and commissioned in time for production start.
