Oakhill Secure Training Centre is operated by G4S Care and Justice Services. The centre provides accommodation across three blocks for up to 80 children (male and female) aged 12 to 17 years who are serving a custodial sentence or who are remanded to custody by the courts. Children are not permitted to leave the centre and they have all their healthcare, educational and religious needs met within the centre.
Salary - £35,000
Work Pattern - Full-time (40 hours a week)
Job Summary: This exciting and rewarding role offers a unique opportunity for a Registered Learning Disability Nurse (RNLD) to join the secure healthcare team. As a key member of the multidisciplinary team, the post holder will undertake specialist assessments, contribute to triage, support medication administration and provide tailored interventions for children with learning disabilities, neurodevelopmental needs and co-occurring mental health difficulties. The post holder will work in a trauma-informed, holistic manner, recognising the impact of adverse childhood experiences, communication needs, sensory differences and behaviours of concern. They will play a vital role in reshaping the service environment, ensuring that children with learning disabilities and neurodiversity receive equitable, accessible and developmentally appropriate healthcare. You will provide healthcare equal to that available in the community for children and young people in custody at Oakhill STC. As part of the Healthcare MDT, you will contribute specialist learning disability expertise and support the strategic development of LD-informed practice across the service. Healthcare delivered should be evidence-based, person-centred and non-judgemental. In accordance with the NMC Code, the post holder will share knowledge, skills and experience to foster an open, learning-focused environment and motivate team members to pursue ongoing professional development.
Main Duties:
- Complete medication rounds and safely administer controlled drugs in accordance with NMC and organisational standards when required.
- Undertake holistic assessments of children with learning disabilities, neurodevelopmental conditions and mental health needs, identifying risks, communication needs and behaviours of concern.
- Develop, implement and review individualised care plans, Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) plans and risk management plans in collaboration with the MDT.
- Act as the named lead nurse for a designated area of healthcare, contributing to service development and quality improvement.
- Support the admission process by identifying vulnerabilities, reasonable adjustments and safeguarding concerns, ensuring these are communicated effectively.
- Coordinate pre-release planning, liaising with community LD teams, CAMHS, FCAMHS, social care and education to ensure continuity of care.
- Maintain regular contact with community professionals, following up referrals and ensuring accurate handover of care on discharge.
- Deliver and co-facilitate mental wellbeing sessions, psychoeducation groups and structured interventions tailored to children with learning disabilities and neurodiversity.
- Adapt communication methods to meet individual needs, using tools such as communication passports, visual supports and sensory strategies to enhance engagement.
Professional:
- To fully observe relevant Professional Practice Guidelines.
- To work with Professional Leads to maintain and further develop high standards of practice, through co-operative work and peer supervision with other Psychological Professions within and outside the company.
- To be aware of and adhere to company policies and procedures.
Training and Staff Development:
- To agree a plan for personal development with senior managers and participate in an Annual Reviews.
- To ensure all mandatory training is in date.
Education & Qualifications:
- Degree level qualification or above.
Experience:
- NMC pin holder (no restrictions present).
- A minimum of 1 years’ experience in a clinical setting.
- Experience of work across service settings and agencies.
- Experience in involvement in innovation or change.
- Experience of working in a secure environment.
Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent relational/engagement skills with the client group who present severe and complex mental health problems.
- Build positive relationships with children.
