As a Commercial Vehicle Traffic Examiner, you will inspect high‑risk vehicles, ensure compliance with transport regulations, manage tachograph records, prepare prosecution papers and support road safety across a range of locations including fixed enforcement sites and motorway service areas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out roadside checks on commercial vehicles and prohibit dangerous vehicles or drivers.
  • Inspect vehicles to ensure compliance with weight limits, operator licences, driver hours, vehicle excise, driving licence and construction and use regulations.
  • Analyse tachograph records for discrepancies or anomalies.
  • Prepare accurate and detailed reports and papers for prosecution cases or the Traffic Commissioner.
  • Answer driver questions regarding driving hours and offer advice, guidance and education as required.
  • Attend team meetings and collaborate with colleagues.
  • Make a tangible contribution to road safety every day.
  • Work on behalf of the Traffic Area Office, investigating environmental complaints about illegal parking and vehicle operations.
  • Prepare case papers and recommendations for court proceedings and present evidence on behalf of DVSA.
  • Maintain high levels of customer service and build good relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure health & safety standards are maintained by the team at DVSA and non‑DVSA locations.
  • Contribute to the achievement of the DVSA business plan.
  • Continue personal development, including professional competency, knowledge and skills.
  • Support DVSA compliance, safety and security commitments through adherence to and championing of policy, procedures and development.
