Job description
A Market Surveillance Unit (MSU) Engineer plays a critical role in protecting the public by ensuring that vehicles, systems and components placed on the UK market comply with safety and regulatory requirements.
Your responsibilities will include, but aren't limited to:
- Lead technical investigations into safety related non compliance
- Assess reported defects, determine whether they pose a serious safety risk, and ensure manufacturers take appropriate remedial action
- Act as project manager for external technical assessments
- Engage confidently with manufacturers, aftermarket producers, technical services and other stakeholders
- Prepare high quality written Ministerial submissions, briefings

Person specification
Essential qualifications/licenses:
Applicants are required to hold at least a vocational related qualification in Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair at level 3, or IMI ATA registration at diagnostic technician level, or IRTEC registration at advanced technician level.
A full category B UK driving licence.
You will be required to provide evidence that you hold any essential qualifications/licenses at some point during the recruitment process. If you cannot provide evidence, your application will be withdrawn.
To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:
- An awareness of EU and UK product safety/approval regulations.
- An awareness of the Codes of Practice for safety defects and recalls.
- Experience in adversity, with the ability to deal with occasional confrontational situations.
- Strongly analytical, with well-developed problem-solving skills.
- Have demonstrable project management skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft platforms including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- An ability to express effectively and have exceptional written, verbal and technical communication skills.
- Resilient and flexible and enjoy working in a demanding technical role.
- Awareness of Problem Solving or Root Cause Analysis (RCA) methodology, such as 8D or similar.

The successful candidate must either hold or be willing to work towards the Government Project Delivery Accreditation once in role
Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements
Full time roles consist of 37 hours per week.
Whilst we welcome applications from those looking to work with us on a part time basis, there is a business requirement for the successful candidate to be able to work at least 30 hours per week.
Regular travel to other offices will be required, which may involve overnight and international stays.
This role can be based at any UK DVSA Office location, subject to capacity at the location. Your presence at one of the locations will form part of the working arrangements agreed with you. This role is suitable for hybrid working, and therefore a combination of workplace and home-based working can be accommodated subject to business requirements. Hybrid working is a non-contractual arrangement where employees have the flexibility to work remotely combined with a minimum of 60% of their working time a month at either their principal workplace or, when required for business reasons, to carry out separate duties at alternative working locations or DVSA sites. There may be occasions where you are required to attend above the minimum expectation.
