As a Lead Technical Architect, you'll play a key role in shaping and delivering the technology that supports customer‑facing and internal services at scale. About the role: You’ll work within DVLA’s IT Services (ITS) Directorate, collaborating across:
- Engineering squads
- Architects and technical leads
- Business directorates
Responsibilities:
- Lead the technical design of systems and services, clearly justifying and communicating architectural decisions
- Assure solution quality, ensuring consistency with DVLA, DfT and government‑wide strategies
- Explore opportunities for cross‑government architectural alignment
- Work collaboratively with engineering squads to transition new solutions into live operation
- Set standards and provide architectural governance and assurance
- Mentor and support architects and engineers across teams
- Provide leadership to the wider architecture community
- Line‑manage and develop colleagues, creating an environment where people can thrive
Qualifications and Experience:
- Has operated as a technical or solution architect on enterprise‑scale systems
- Is confident owning architecture end‑to‑end, from design through delivery and assurance
- Enjoys working with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders
- Can influence and challenge senior leaders constructively
- Likes balancing strategic vision with practical delivery realities
- Strong experience of infrastructure and cloud technologies
- Unified communications and omni‑channel contact centre solutions
- Networking concepts (LAN / WAN / WLAN)
- Microsoft Entra ID, O365, and hybrid Active Directory environments
- Microsoft Azure Cloud Adoption Framework principles
- Designing systems that protect sensitive data
- Collaboratively creating and evolving solution designs
- Providing technical leadership, governance and assurance across complex solutions
