As Head of Cyber Recovery, Storage and Backup at DVLA, you will be accountable for the strategic leadership, management and delivery of DVLA’s cyber recovery, storage and backup services. Ensuring DVLA maintains a tested, secure and resilient capability to recover critical systems following cyber incidents and ransomware attacks. The role plays a critical part in protecting DVLA’s data and enabling the continued delivery of essential public services.
Responsibilities
- Develop strategic and tactical recovery testing playbooks and plans for technologies and services in your area of responsibility, ensuring they are future-proofed and that the organisation derives maximum value from investment in technologies.
- Own the operational relationships with suppliers, ensuring services and products are delivered and aligned to industry best practice including performance and incident management and regulatory and contractual requirements.
- Act as the DVLA authority for recovery readiness, protection assurance and vault security, demonstrating to audit and assurance bodies that a tested, offline and immutable recovery capability is consistently maintained.
- Lead, direct and manage investment for storage, backup and cyber-recovery services, owning the resourcing and delivery of change, recovery testing, post-attack recovery and hardware refresh activities, ensuring solutions are designed to evolve and are delivered across multiple teams and disciplines.
- Lead, direct and maintain the capability of the storage, backup and cyber-recovery teams in the end-to-end design, implementation, governance, and operation of the storage, backup, vault and clean-room environments, supporting DVLA in line with formal governance.
- Manage storage, backup and cyber-recovery services by building and maintaining relationships with senior stakeholders advising and guiding multi-disciplinary teams to ensure operational excellence.
- Review implementation plans, ways of working and identifying improvements.
- Work with technical architects to translate the architectural designs into operations and support technical architects in operationalising the designs.
About You
To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:
- Significant experience in cyber recovery, storage and backup services, gained through hands on leadership in large, complex IT environments.
- You will bring technical expertise alongside the ability to operate strategically, balancing risk, cost, recoverability and service continuity.
- A proven track record of leading and developing high performing technical teams, embedding strong governance, assurance and continuous improvement practices.
- You will be comfortable working across organisational boundaries, influencing senior technical and non-technical stakeholders and managing critical supplier relationships.
- Confident making complex decisions in high pressure situations, including during live incidents, and able to communicate clearly and effectively with senior leaders about technical risk, recovery options and business impact.
Additional Information
The role is part of the Government Digital and Data profession and utilises an enhanced Capability–Based Pay Framework which provides access to a Digital and Data allowance. The base pay is £69,501. In addition to this the role includes a Digital and Data allowance of up to £28,560. The value of allowance awarded will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated through the selection process.
