What will you be doing

The role

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Health & Safety Advisor who is ready to step into a broader, more influential role.

As Senior Health & Safety Advisor, you will play a key role in supporting and strengthening health, safety and environmental practices across our two UK sites in Leamington Spa and Wellesbourne. You will work closely with the Head of HR, senior stakeholders, line managers and facilities colleagues to embed practical, proportionate H&S solutions across the business.

While you will be the senior on‑site H&S professional, you will have access to external specialist support where required, making this role particularly well suited to someone looking to continue developing their professional capability and breadth of experience.

How you will work

This is a hands‑on, visible role, requiring a practical approach and strong influencing skills. You will spend time on site, building effective relationships, supporting managers and helping employees understand their responsibilities so that health and safety becomes part of how we work every day.

Key responsibilities

  • Act as the senior, day‑to‑day Health & Safety Advisor across our two UK sites
  • Support the development, review and implementation of H&S policies, procedures and guidance, ensuring they are understood and applied in practice
  • Coordinate and carry out workplace inspections, audits and reviews, reporting key findings and recommendations to relevant stakeholders
  • Support accident, incident and near‑miss investigations, ensuring appropriate actions are identified and followed up
  • Identify hazards and ensure suitable and sufficient risk assessments and RAMS are in place, reviewed regularly and improved where needed
  • Maintain awareness of relevant health, safety and welfare legislation and support the business in understanding practical impacts and changes
  • Act as the first point of contact for core H&S topics (e.g. fire safety, COSHH, machinery safety), engaging external specialists where deeper expertise is required
  • Support managers and teams through advice, coaching and informal training on health and safety matters
  • Promote a positive, proactive safety culture, encouraging engagement and continuous improvement
  • Develop and deliver toolbox talks, briefings and other practical H&S communications
  • Produce clear, accessible H&S communications such as bulletins, updates and guidance notes
  • Support the effective management of our two UK sites, working with the Facilities team to coordinate maintenance, compliance activities and site improvements
  • Support compliance related to site safety, security, contractor management and safe systems of work
  • Ensure equipment, substances and work areas are managed and used safely in line with agreed procedures
  • Work collaboratively with HR, Operations and external advisors to support wider sustainability and compliance objectives

The statements above are intended to describe the general nature and level of the role. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of responsibilities, duties and skills of the role holder. Furthermore, they do not establish a contract of employment and are subject to change at DSD’s discretion.

What you will need

  • Strong practical experience in a Health & Safety advisory, or senior advisor role
  • A recognised health & safety qualification (e.g. IOSH, NCRQ) or equivalent practical experience
  • Good working knowledge of UK H&S legislation and its application in a practical business environment
  • Confidence working independently, prioritising work and advising a range of stakeholders
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage at all levels
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Full UK driving licence and ability to travel between sites
  • Experience within an engineering, manufacturing or technical environment
  • Exposure to facilities coordination or site compliance activities
  • An interest in continued professional development and further H&S qualifications
