The Responsible Engineer (RE) shall assume overall engineering responsibility for construction for all elements of the works related to a particular discipline and shall be responsible for implementing the Contractor’s engineering management processes. This role sits within the engineering function of the Contractor’s team and shall operate in parallel with the Contractor’s Project Management team. The Responsible Engineer will support both the Lead Engineering Manager and the Lead Design Manager to deliver the scope of works in line with the accepted design and the Client requirements. The Responsible Engineer provides effective leadership of multi-disciplinary teams and subcontractors maintaining an uncompromising commitment to safety and a collaborative approach to meet the design and construction programme; achieve exemplary quality and sustainability standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Person with accountability for the day-to-day management and co-ordination of technical and engineering activities within a specific engineering discipline.
- Support development of construction methodologies and risk assessments with sub-contractors and the construction team.
- Co-ordination of technical issues arising during construction through the TQ and RFI processes.
- Manage sub-contractor’s Inspection & Test Plans (ITP) development and support construction team for effective implementation of the ITPs.
- Liaise with Designers and Design Managers for related issues and deliverables.
- Liaise with Design Management team for design and assurance of Contractor Design Portions.
- Manage technical and system integration issues with other packages and disciplines.
- Liaise with TWC for production of design briefs for temporary works.
- Liaise with Construction Managers, Quality Managers and Temporary Works Supervisors for day-to-day site issues.
- Liaise with design team to manage the field changes through the change control process.
- Confirm the technical acceptability of proposed materials/samples.
- Manage Request for Information process on assigned packages.
- Manage action plan that detail the actions, procedures and contingency measures to be followed in the event that the monitoring system shows unacceptable levels of deformation/movement or other incidents occur.
- Review and accept preconstruction trials and all associated test results.
- Approve competence of sub-contractor’s key personnel related with design and engineering.
- Attend relevant meetings, carry out any tasks delegated by the Engineering Manager and deputise as required.
- The Responsible Engineer shall, on behalf of the Lead Engineering Manager, certify that their package of works has been constructed in accordance with approved design and shall approve as-built drawings.
Technical competencies
- Have excellent communication skills (including presentation skills) in English, both written and verbal and the ability to report at both Project and Board level.
- A good working knowledge of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Construction Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations 1996, Construction Design and Management Regulations 2007, Management of health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and other relevant legislation.
- Excellent organisation and people management/ team building skills.

Qualifications, Certifications & Experience
- Educated to degree or higher level or equivalent in the relevant discipline. A lower educational level, typically HNC or HND, may be acceptable where a very significant level of experience in a senior technical engineering role can be demonstrated.
- Be a Chartered Engineer in the related discipline.
- Demonstrating relevant experience in projects encompassing similar temporary type, size, complexity and environment – Required.
- Ability to manage teams of people in a multi-disciplinary environment. Excellent organisational skills and the ability to plan ahead and manage own time.
- Strong communication skills in English (oral and written) – Required.
- Appropriate CSCS card type and level – Required.
- Computer skills – well developed IT skills including a working knowledge of BIM, Autocad, and the use of collaborative platforms.
- Proven track record of delivering projects to time and budget, together with an exemplary safety, quality and sustainability record.
