The Design Manager is a key role in the Design Management Group which works closely with Delivery Project Management, the Chief Engineering Group and other MDjv support functions to discharge MDjv's primary Lead Designer obligations to:

  • Lead on all aspects of design, including co-ordination, submission, compliance, programming and management of design, engineering and assurance.
  • Manage integration of the works within themselves, and with interfacing stakeholders and contracts.
  • Certify that design, construction, testing, commissioning, and handover of the works meet the requirements.
  • Support the Principal Designer to discharge its Principal Designer obligations.

The successful applicant will receive a formal notification of the Lead Designer duties delegated to them.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Senior Design Manager with project level design management activities and lead all package level design management activities with the support of the Senior Design Manager.
  • Project level design management activities include:
  • Ensuring project's design scope and requirements are clear and have been formally baselined.
  • Developing the design completion strategy to identify the extent of Design Consultant and CDP subcontractor design responsibility.
  • Establish and procure the consultant design team and produce scopes of service.
  • Overseeing that the design and model maturity the project's strategies and components should be developed to at each design stage are agreed.
  • Establishing and agreeing the project's design deliverable requirements for:
  • Design acceptance against requirements
  • Cost and programme assurance
  • Procurement
  • Consents
  • Developing the overall design programme and agreeing key design programme dates.
  • Developing the design review plan, identifying internal and external reviewers of the designs and agreeing review workflows.
  • Establishing the project's Pre-Construction Information and carrying out gap analyses for communication to the HS2 Principal Designer representative.
  • Project level progress reporting.
  • Package level design management activities include:
    • Ensuring requirements are correctly allocated to consultant and subcontractor design packages.
    • Define and agree consultant and subcontractor design package scopes.
    • Define and agree design package programmes and key dates.
    • Agree TIDPs with the designers and produce MIDPs for deliverables to be issued to HS2.
    • Chair and minute package level meetings including design progress meetings, coordination meetings, external interface coordination meetings.
    • Monitor and report on actual vs planned progress and escalate key issues to the Senior Design Manager and other key project roles.
    • Identify, manage and report on package level risks.
    • Monitor that CDM risk registers are developed and maintained by the consultants and that they mitigate risks appropriately.
    • Chair CDM risk handover meetings to the delivery project management team and project operators/maintainers.
    • Manage package designs submissions, monitor design review progress and close out deliverable rejections and comments.
    • Monitor design packages are appropriately checked and certified and support design package assurance activity.

    Technical Skills And Competencies

    • Sufficient technical knowledge of the design to be able to manage design packages effectively.
    • Experience managing and driving multi-disciplinary design teams and good appreciation of their common shortfalls and how to manage them.
    • Comfortable working in large project teams.
    • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
    • Good knowledge of construction processes and sequencing.
    • Proficiency and experience with design authorship software such as Bentley Open Buildings Designer or Autodesk Revit.
    • Solid working knowledge of Building Information Modelling and Model Coordination activities and workflows.
    • Ability to navigate complex Common Data Environments and ideally experienced with Aconex, Asite, Projectwise and Assetwise.
    • Good ability to plan and forecast and experienced with design programming including good understanding of programme logic and dependencies.
    • Ideally experienced using simple planning software such as Aphex or Smartsheets.
    • Excellent communication skills (including presentation skills) in English, both written and verbal and the ability to report at package level.
    • Good, confident interpersonal skills and ability to maintain good internal and external relationships as well as control high pressure situations and topics.
    • Proficiency with data management and analysis including experienced user of MS Excel and ability to use basic formulas to manipulate data for planning and reporting purposes.
    • Good working knowledge of health and safety in design including:
    • Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015
    • Building Safety Act 2022
    • Other relevant legislation
  • Good practical understanding of the key duties and day-to-day activities contractors and designers must undertake when planning and delivering designs to satisfy health and safety legislation and regulations.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of regulatory compliance including with Building Regulations.
  • Ideally experience working in a design management capacity with one or all of HS2, Transport for London and Network Rail.
  • Experience working with local authorities and demonstrating compliance with their requirements, ideally with London Borough of Camden.
  • Good understanding of procurement processes and contract management.
  • Ideally experienced with NEC forms of contract but not essential.
  • Qualifications, Certifications And Experience

    • Experience within a similar role within an appropriately sized contracting organisation.
    • Educated to degree (or equivalent) in a technical discipline, typically engineering or architectural.
    • Membership of an appropriate professional body, typically chartered member of Institute of Civil Engineering or an international equivalent professional status.
