The Maintenance Assistant plays an important role in supporting the smooth, safe, and efficient running of the factory by helping maintain equipment, facilities, tools, and working areas to a high standard. This is a hands-on role suited to someone who is practical, reliable, proactive, and keen to support a busy manufacturing environment. Working closely with the Maintenance team and wider factory colleagues, the role helps reduce downtime, protect production flow, and ensure the site remains safe, compliant, and well maintained.

THE ROLE

The purpose of the Assistant Maintenance Engineer role is to support planned and reactive maintenance activity across the Made In England factory. The role assists with basic repairs, inspections, preventative maintenance tasks, housekeeping, contractor support, and general facilities duties to help maintain a safe, clean, and efficient workplace.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the MIE team with day-to-day maintenance tasks across production, warehouse, development, and shared factory areas.
  • Assist with basic repairs to equipment, fixtures, fittings, workstations, storage areas, and site facilities.
  • Carry out routine checks and basic preventative maintenance tasks as instructed.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests, escalating issues where specialist support or further investigation is required.
  • Help identify faults, risks, defects, or unsafe conditions and report them clearly to the appropriate person.
  • Support the safe set-up, movement, and adjustment of equipment, benches, tooling, materials, and workplace layouts where required.
  • Maintain good housekeeping standards in maintenance areas, stores, workshops, and factory spaces.
  • Support the control and organisation of maintenance tools, spare parts, consumables, and equipment.
  • Assist contractors and service providers while on site, ensuring they are directed safely and follow site rules.
  • Work closely with Production teams to help minimise downtime and maintain operational flow.
  • Follow health, safety, environmental, and company procedures at all times.
  • Support continuous improvement activity by identifying practical ways to improve safety, reliability, efficiency, and workplace standards.

Health, Safety and Compliance

  • Always work in line with site health and safety procedures, risk assessments, safe systems of work, and company standards.
  • Use tools, equipment, PPE, and materials safely and correctly.
  • Report hazards, near misses, damage, or unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Support environmental good practice, including waste control, energy awareness, and responsible use of materials.
  • Ensure maintenance activity is carried out with minimal disruption to production and with clear communication to affected teams.

Key Working Relationships

The role works closely with the MIE team, Production, Warehouse, Logistics, Development, Quality, Learning and Development, Health and Safety, and external contractors. Strong communication, teamwork, and a practical approach are essential to keeping the factory operating safely and efficiently.

In line with UK health and safety legislation and our commitment to employee wellbeing, we conduct health surveillance for roles at our Made in England Factory (MIE). Health surveillance is a legal requirement where employees may be exposed to specific risks. It helps ensure early detection of work-related ill health, supports vulnerable employees, and evaluates the effectiveness of control measures. As part of this process, we will carry out an initial health check at the offer stage (or within the first six weeks of employment) and continue with periodic health assessments thereafter.
