Wardell Armstrong LLP is a multidisciplinary environmental consultancy with offices throughout the UK employing c. 500 staff. We have been providing expert archaeological and heritage services for over 25 years. Our Archaeology team is based at 6 of Wardell Armstrong's UK offices, with our largest centres in Bury St Edmunds and Carlisle, which also provide the full range of post-excavation services as well as being bases for fieldwork operations.

We are looking for a field archaeologist to be based in Bolton to support our growing portfolio of projects in the region. Ideally, we are looking for archaeologists with at least 3 months of site experience in commercial archaeology, but we will also consider graduates and applicants with equivalent alternative experience and qualifications.

You will work as part of our wider team and could be based on a variety of sites including large scale evaluations and excavations. The work may also include working on geophysics projects if you have experience or are willing to learn. You should understand paper-based field recording systems, and some experience with digital recording systems would also be desirable but not essential.

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Some practical experience of working on archaeological sites.
  • A degree in archaeology or equivalent experience.
  • Driving license.

Desirable:

  • CIfA membership at PCIfA level.

Applicants must be flexible over travel and hours as we work on sites across the UK. Our management team understands the benefit of having local archaeologists work on local sites both from the archaeological and environmental standpoint, and as such we endeavour to offer our staff work close to their home base wherever possible. Due to the nature of the work, a full driving licence and access to a car is required.

We offer an excellent subsistence package in addition to travel allowance and single occupancy accommodation, plus 1.5x pay/TOIL for work carried out during unsocial hours (10pm - 6am). For permanent staff, when not on site, you will be expected to attend the office on a hybrid basis; for full time staff, this is 3 days out of 5.

To support your personal development, we offer personalised development plans and an annual appraisal system, as well as a dedicated training budget to which you can apply to meet your career aspirations. This is in addition to any standard training required to undertake your role. Wardell Armstrong covers a professional subscription for each staff member which would cover your CIfA (or equivalent) subscriptions.

Wardell Armstrong has strict health and safety protocols in place to protect you on site, with a dedicated Health and Safety team based in our Head Office. We issue you with all the PPE you require to work safely and comfortably. In addition to our Health and Safety support, we have a dedicated Human Resources team who offer advice and support, Mental Health First Aid, and have recently launched a company-wide health support package centred specifically around wellbeing and mental health.

We also offer:

  • Membership of the Firms Group Personal Pension Plan with Employers contribution of up to 5%.
  • Payment of a relevant professional subscription (CIfA).
  • 24 days annual leave per year.
  • Membership to the Firms Private Health Care Scheme.
  • Inclusion in the Firms Critical Illness Cover Policy.
  • Inclusion in the Firms Life Assurance Policy insuring you 3 times your annual salary.
  • Mobile Phone with inclusive tariff including personal usage.
  • Flexitime Working Schedule.
  • Long service awards.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme.
  • Travel Loans.
