We are currently recruiting an experienced and highly motivated HGV Technician to join our team of highly skilled technicians. As the successful HGV Technician, you will report to the VMU Manager and be part of the team responsible for inspecting, servicing, maintaining, and repairing the DPD HGV fleet, made up of approximately 1500 tractor units and 3000 trailers. You will ensure that the fleet is maintained to the highest standard of safety, is fully compliant with DVSA regulations, and remains operationally efficient by minimising vehicle downtime.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine scheduled safety inspections in accordance with DVSA requirements.
  • Diagnostics and repair of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic faults on the various vehicles within the DPD fleet.
  • Completing repairs and replacements on components including engines, transmissions, brake systems, suspension systems, electrical systems, diagnostics, exhaust and emission systems.
  • Prepare vehicles to a high standard for MOT testing and ensuring all compliance standards are met.
  • Maintain accurate service records, defect reports, and inspection documentation.
  • Ensure vehicles meet road safety regulations and legal compliance standards.
  • Use diagnostic equipment and software to conduct systematic fault identification and efficiently resolve mechanical and electrical faults in modern HGV systems.
  • Maintain a clean, organised and safe workshop environment in accordance with health and safety standards.
  • Ensure tools, equipment, and diagnostic systems are maintained and used correctly.
  • Collaborate with other technicians, VMU technical operatives and management staff to ensure efficient fleet maintenance.
Requirements
  • Proven experience working within a similar Heavy Goods or Heavy Plant role.
  • Have relevant qualifications such as NVQ Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and repair (or equivalent).
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the guide to maintaining roadworthiness.
  • Strong knowledge of heavy vehicle mechanical, electrical and braking systems.
  • Team player who can also work independently.
  • Ability to read technical manuals, diagnostic reports and repair manuals.
  • Excellent problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
  • Good organisational and time management skills with the ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Strong commitment to Health, Safety and compliance standards.

  • HGV Class 1 licence
  • Experience working on Mercedes, DAF, MAN and Volvo tractor units.
