DP World are looking for Mechatronics Apprentices to join our engineering department based at the London Gateway Port in Stanford le Hope, Essex. This program allows people to start their engineering careers while studying for their engineering certifications. We are completely committed to helping people acquire engineering abilities and become skilled professionals. This is a fantastic opportunity to work on unique pieces of equipment and learn from experienced engineers.
The apprenticeship will be completed successfully through study, job experience, coaching, training, and development (both practical and vocational). You will acquire a work‑related professional certification, guaranteeing that you can perform a function in Engineering competently and effectively.
How will you contribute:
- Support the maintenance and reliability of critical port and landside equipment.
- This development role provides structured, hands‑on learning across Mechanical, Electrical, and Mechatronic systems, enabling the Apprentice to build competency towards becoming a fully skilled Engineering Technician.
- As part of a world‑class, safety‑critical terminal operation, the Apprentice will contribute to the inspection, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of assets, including automated stacking cranes, Quay cranes, mobile equipment, and associated infrastructure.
- The role requires working in an operational port environment where equipment availability, response times, and safe working practices are essential to maintaining high service levels for customers.
- Work will be carried out both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and may involve exposure to noise, heights, moving equipment and electrical systems.
- Under supervision, you will progressively undertake preventive and corrective maintenance tasks, fault‑finding, and reliability improvements in line with departmental procedures and OEM guidance.
- Collaboration is an essential part of the role. You will interact daily with Engineers, Technicians, Supervisors, Operations teams, and external contractors to ensure maintenance activities are completed safely, efficiently, and to required standards.
- You are expected to follow instructions diligently, demonstrate strong attention to detail, and develop professional behaviours that reflect DP World’s values.
- You will attend scheduled off‑site learning with the training provider and must maintain logbooks, complete assessments, and produce portfolio evidence to support your qualification and end‑point assessment.
- Health and Safety is central to the role. Follow all DP World London Gateway safety policies, permit‑to‑work requirements, and risk‑control measures, actively contributing to a culture of Zero Harm and continuous improvement.
By developing future engineering capability, this role supports the long‑term resilience, sustainability, and operational excellence of DP World London Gateway, ensuring the terminal continues to deliver safe, reliable, and innovative services now and in the future.
Key Requirements:
- GCSEs Grade 5 in MATHS is ESSENTIAL alongside Grade 4 in ENGLISH.
- Demonstrate a genuine interest and understanding of Engineering, and a desire to learn to use engineering principles to provide solutions to the development of processes and products, ranging from small component designs to extremely large plant, machinery, or vehicles.
- To undertake the apprenticeship for the duration of the 4 years.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to use all Microsoft applications.

- A full valid UK driving licence or appropriate international licence allowing you to drive on UK roads.
- No unspent criminal convictions.
- Due to manufacturing guidelines on equipment and site safety critical health and safety requirements, we have strict weight and medical requirements that need to be met and maintained. For our safety critical roles health and medical and fitness checks are performed. Requirements include, but are not limited to, weight, height, blood pressure and hearing.
