DP World London Gateway is entering an exciting phase of growth, and we’re seeking a visionary Automation Manager to shape the future of our automated port operations. Reporting directly to the VP Port Expansion, this role puts you at the centre of some of the most advanced automation projects in the global logistics industry—from Berth 5 Automatic Stacking Cranes and BoxBay to the Western Rail Terminal and other semi‑or fully‑automated developments. You’ll lead these projects end‑to‑end: from tendering and design through delivery, commissioning and seamless handover into operations. Collaborating closely with operational teams, you’ll ensure each automation solution reflects our operating philosophy, introduces smart enhancements, and is delivered on time, safely and within budget.
How You Will Contribute
- Ensure all operational, safety and statutory requirements are integrated into automation project design and build.
- Document, sign off and incorporate operational, IT and Engineering requirements into automation design.
- Ensure mechanical, electrical and automation designs prioritise safe, easy maintenance for technicians.
- Ensure supplier designs meet DP World standards, including full integration between the Terminal Operating System and supplier systems.
- Lead Technicians/Engineers involved in equipment and automation delivery and commissioning.
- Ensure safety of contractors and internal teams throughout all project phases.
- Produce regular reports on progress and quality; monitor contractor performance against milestones and KPIs.
- Build strong understanding of automation systems to support training and development of maintenance teams post‑handover.
- Arrange supplier training for maintenance teams and support spares procurement planning to ensure reliability and continuity.
- Monitor automated equipment performance post‑handover and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Optimise system performance in line with operational patterns, business needs and industry developments.
- Work closely with Port Expansion, BAU Engineering, Operations and Civil teams to ensure cohesive and streamlined project delivery.
- Champion a safe, healthy working environment by leading and complying with all Health, Safety, Environment and Security policies, including Fatal Risk Standards.
What You Will Bring
- HND or Degree in Engineering, or related comparable level of in-depth experience in a similar role.
- Extensive Automation experience in any industrial environment. Ports and Terminals experience will be preferred.
- Effective management of Contractors/contracts.
- Leading delivery and commissioning of industrial Automation Projects.
- The ability to work with resilience and positivity under pressure and in a fast paced, changeable environment.
- Excellent IT and systems knowledge.
- Excellent in depth HSE knowledge and a proactive approach to Safety.
- Previous experience working as an effective manager in a fast-moving operational business.
- A full driving licence allowing you to drive in the UK.
- Medical fitness and ability to work fully on a safety critical environment.
- Hold the right to work in the UK.
