This role serves as a PostgreSQL subject matter expert within a team that manages PostgreSQL, Progress OpenEdge, Oracle, and SQL Server databases. The primary focus is on administering PostgreSQL while developing the ability to support at least one of the other platforms through training and mentoring as required.

This role can be based in the UK/Ireland or Germany on a remote basis but with the expectation of travel internationally when required by the business.

About The Role

  • Administrate, configure, and monitor a range of PostgreSQL databases as an integral part of the DP World DBA team. Ensure optimal performance, availability, and reliability of the managed PostgreSQL systems.
  • Implement industry best practices for PostgreSQL database administration, including database tuning, resource management, and data integrity maintenance.
  • Proactively monitor PostgreSQL database performance, identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks to enhance system responsiveness.
  • Collaborate with the DBA team and IT stakeholders to troubleshoot and resolve complex PostgreSQL database-related issues.
  • Implement and maintain effective backup and recovery strategies for PostgreSQL databases, ensuring data integrity and uninterrupted business operations.
  • Actively contribute to disaster recovery planning and testing to ensure data and system availability during emergencies.
  • Plan and execute PostgreSQL database upgrades and migrations both on‑prem and in the cloud, adhering to best practices and minimizing downtime.
  • Collaborate closely with Infrastructure, Application, and Development teams to understand PostgreSQL database requirements and provide essential support during projects and deployments.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of PostgreSQL database configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps.
  • Ensure timely application of PostgreSQL database patches, updates, and bug fixes to keep systems secure and current.
  • Engage in training and educational opportunities to enhance PostgreSQL database administration skills. Stay informed about the latest features, best practices, and trends in PostgreSQL technologies.
  • Participate in an out‑of‑hours on‑call rota (1 week in 4 maximum).

Your Key Skills

  • Bachelor\'s degree in computer science, mathematics, or related field (relevant technical experience considered).
  • At least eight years of related database administration experience, with at least 3‑4 specifically dealing with PostgreSQL.
  • Strong technical background with proven analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Experience managing EDB Postgres Advanced Server and PostgreSQL environments in Linux‑based deployments.
  • Experience with Oracle, SQL Server, or Progress OpenEdge is a bonus.
  • Experience with performance tuning and optimization, using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools such as EDB Postgres Enterprise Manager and pgAdmin.
  • Experience with backups, restores, and recovery models for PostgreSQL/EDB.
  • Knowledge of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for PostgreSQL/EDB, including replication and clustering.
  • Proficiency in PostgreSQL/EDB performance tuning and optimization techniques.
  • Experience working in environments that include Red Hat Linux, Windows Server, Azure, and other cloud technologies.
  • Strong knowledge and experience of working with database management tools such as pgAdmin, EDB tools, and command‑line utilities.
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Python, PowerShell) for automating tasks and processes related to PostgreSQL/EDB administration.
  • Familiarity with change management, change control processes, and problem management specific to PostgreSQL/EDB environments.
  • Comprehensive understanding of PostgreSQL/EDB database architecture, file structures, and design principles.
  • Organised and adept at working within deadlines, capable of managing multiple project requests concurrently.
  • Strong documentation skills with experience in establishing and improving processes and procedures related to PostgreSQL/EDB administration.
