DP World London Gateway are recruiting for an Operations Shift Manager. We are seeking a dedicated professional to manage the daily operations of our Ports Container Terminal. The role involves maximising efficiency and productivity while ensuring safety, compliance, and security. You will lead and develop the shift team, build relationships with internal and external clients and stakeholders, and uphold our core values to support the business strategy. NOTE: this is a full-time position with a full shift pattern 12-hours, on rotation 2 days, 2 nights 4 off.

How will you contribute

  • Operational Management
    • Ensure that the operational requirements of the working shift are fully met in an efficient and safe manner, in accordance with current safety regulations, risk assessments and health and safety policies.
    • Ensure that systems and procedures are followed to enable the progress of operations to be monitored by other LGPL staff, customers and authorities.
    • Co-ordinate the various activities of different employee groups to maximise the efficient deployment of labour, while monitoring the skill and resourcing levels of the shift team.
    • Maintain a log, updated every shift, with all the operational and other notable events from the shift, to facilitate the operations for the next shift, and to serve as a record of matters which may not be recorded by other means.
    • Monitor and analyse the following factors on a regular basis: Quay crane productivity and utilisation, utilisation of other quay resources, completion time for vessel operations, Berth occupancy and vessel waiting time before commencement and post completion of operations.
    • Contribute to the continuous business improvement process and to the meeting of business objectives.
  • Communication and collaboration
    • Ensure effective communication within the shift team by briefing team members on forthcoming shift operations, expected outcomes, operational objectives and customer expectations.
    • Participate in the daily operations meeting when on shift and be prepared to chair the meeting in the absence of others.
    • Be fully conversant with the operational systems and be able to communicate at all levels with Customers, Agents, Port Authority, Representatives and working colleagues across all departments.
    • Engage proactively, meaningfully and regularly with the on-site Union representatives, to build a collaborative working relationship.
  • Health, Safety and Security
    • Ensure that a safe and healthy work environment exists by being responsible for leading, improving and engaging with Health, Safety, Environment and Security Policies and Procedures, including safe working practices and complying with Fatal Risk Standards to achieve full compliance with the relevant legislation.
    • Where necessary implement Drug and Alcohol tests and carry out alcohol testing for cause in line with the Drug and Alcohol Policy.
  • Leadership and Team Management
    • Direct and drive a performance management culture within the team, ensuring that staff meet their targets in line with the business needs and have regular engagement with their line managers.
    • Lead, manage and motivate the team in line with business and people policies and procedures, to ensure they deliver services in line with expectations and to build engagement levels.
    • Develop your team, through coaching, mentoring, providing feedback and working collaboratively with the People team.

What you will bring

  • Experience of working in Container Terminals or comparable experience is advantageous.
  • Previous experience working as an effective manager and leader in a fast-moving operational business.
  • Excellent Health, Safety, Security and Environmental knowledge and understanding.
  • Experience managing and coordinating incidents in a safety critical environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of quick and appropriate decision making, considering all involved factors, consequences and impacts.
  • Excellent systems and IT knowledge and ability.
  • Ability to interface and efficiently communicate and build meaningful relationships at all departmental levels, and present clear and concise reports/presentations.
  • Demonstrable experience of proactive problem solving and innovation, driving operational efficiency.
  • The ability to work with resilience and positivity under pressure and in a fast paced, changeable environment.

  • A full valid UK driving licence or appropriate international licence allowing you to drive on UK roads

  • Due to manufacturing guidelines on equipment and site safety critical health and safety requirements, we have strict weight and medical requirements that need to be met and maintained. For our safety critical roles health and medical and fitness checks are performed. Requirements include, but are not limited to, weight, height, blood pressure and hearing.
  • We may close our roles early, depending on the number of applications received.
