The predicted salary is between 36000 - 60000 £ per year.

This role is for an engineer / technologist to support the Materials & Process team on a number of projects. Example projects include material obsolescence, defect analysis, cost reduction, alternative coatings and novel manufacturing techniques.

Key Responsibilities

  • Material Selection And Evaluation: Research and select appropriate materials for specific applications based on performance, cost, and safety requirements. Evaluate material properties such as strength, durability, corrosion resistance, and thermal performance.
  • Process Development: Develop and optimize manufacturing processes to ensure high-quality production. Collaborate with design and manufacturing teams to ensure processes align with product specifications and requirements.
  • Testing And Analysis: Conduct material and process testing to validate performance and compliance with industry standards. Analyze test results and recommend improvements or alternative materials/processes.
  • Problem Solving: Investigate and resolve material or process-related issues during production or product development. Implement corrective actions to address defects or inefficiencies.
  • Documentation And Reporting: Prepare technical reports, specifications, and documentation for materials and processes. Maintain records of testing, evaluations, and certifications.
  • Compliance And Standards: Ensure materials and processes comply with regulatory, environmental, and safety standards. Stay updated on industry trends, standards, and advancements in materials science.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including design engineers, manufacturing engineers, and suppliers. Provide technical support and guidance to teams regarding material and process selection. Engage in long/short term projects with the Materials and Process team on a variety of materials and processes related to propeller manufacture. Help support laboratory team with incoming material analysis and testing.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvement and cost reduction while maintaining quality and safety. Participate in lean manufacturing initiatives to enhance efficiency and reduce waste. Assist with blade defect and material analysis.
  • Supplier Interaction: Evaluate and qualify suppliers for materials and processes. Collaborate with suppliers to ensure material quality and availability.
  • Safety And Quality Focus: Prioritize safety in all material and process decisions. Ensure processes meet quality standards and contribute to reliable product performance.

Essential Experience Or Like To Have

  • Materials Science Knowledge: An understanding of material properties (e.g., metals, composites, polymers, ceramics) and their applications. Experience with material selection for specific engineering applications, considering factors like strength, durability, corrosion resistance, and cost.
  • Manufacturing Processes: Hands-on experience with manufacturing processes. Familiarity with process optimization techniques to improve efficiency and quality.
  • Testing and Analysis: Experience conducting material testing (e.g., tensile, and chemical tests) and analyzing results. Proficiency in using tools and techniques for failure analysis and root cause investigation.
  • Industry Standards and Compliance: Knowledge of industry standards and regulations. Experience ensuring materials and processes meet safety, environmental, and quality requirements.
  • Problem Solving and Troubleshooting: Proven ability to identify and resolve material or process-related issues during product development or manufacturing. Experience implementing corrective actions to address defects or inefficiencies.
  • Design Collaboration: Experience working with design and stress engineers to ensure material and process choices align with product requirements.
  • Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement: Experience with lean manufacturing principles, such as waste reduction, process standardization, and continuous improvement.
  • Project Management: Experience managing or contributing to projects involving material and process development. Ability to coordinate with cross-functional teams and meet deadlines.
  • Software And Tools: Good knowledge of Microsoft Office and IT communication and documentation.

Qualifications / Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university/college or HND or other diploma with manufacturing/engineering experience or relevant experiences.
  • Hands-on experience with aerospace composite manufacturing techniques, resin transfer molding (RTM), hand layup and vacuum bagging, tooling design and mold preparation.

Proficiency in manufacturing processes: Expertise in aerospace-specific composite manufacturing techniques such as autoclave curing, automated fibre placement (AFP), resin transfer molding (RTM), and hand layup. Analytical skills: Ability to use simulation tools to analyze and optimize composite designs.
