The Mechanical Disciplines Leader is responsible for delivering technical output for all lifecycle phases of the business. An experienced leader of leaders, you will direct teams of design and analysis engineers to meet programme requirements and develop both the teams and their processes through continuous improvement, balancing capacity and capability with business demands. As part of the engineering leadership team you will be a key player in determining engineering strategy and influencing future business direction. Liaising closely with airworthiness, technology, development and programmes counterparts, you will lead a highly-skilled multi-disciplinary global engineering team to deliver business needs and achieve continuous process improvements.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Leadership, support and development of a world-class global multi-disciplinary team, including recruitment and induction of new team members; team member career development and ongoing appraisal processes; training, coaching and mentoring for continuous improvement.
- Continual engagement with other engineering leaders to receive demand and determine resource supply plans to achieve the business objectives and continually enhance capabilities.
- Leadership of technical excellence within the team in accordance with our design organization approval, including engagement with technical activities when required; creating, developing and enhancing processes and practices, applying solid understanding of engineering principles to multiple technical challenges.
- Financial oversight, including budgeting and tracking of spend, approval of labour vouchering, travel expenses, project spend and other business processes.
- Upholding and developing strong Lean principles, approaches, standard work and daily management within the team; leading and supporting Lean activities and events to achieve business priorities.
- Communication and reporting through regular reviews covering current status, projects, investigations and general activities, business issues, risks and opportunities.
- Participation in the engineering leadership team to improve effectiveness, resolve issues, develop improved understanding and processes that better support the overall business activities.
- Support of technical and enterprise risk and opportunity management.
Required Qualifications / Experience
- This role requires significant experience in Engineering/Technology & Functional Management. Knowledge level is comparable to a Master's degree from an accredited university or college (or a diploma with relevant experience).
- Experience in engineering design and analysis through all lifecycle phases in aerospace or a similarly-regulated industry, ideally in a UKCAA/EASA Part-21 Design Organisation.
Desired Characteristics
- Passion for developing your engaging leadership, and a demonstrated ability to develop and inspire teams ideally with experience as a leader of leaders.
- Technical background in complex systems including mechanical, aircraft control and/or electronic control systems, and a working knowledge of hydro-mechanical control systems would be advantageous.
- Confidence in customer relationship management built from experience with primes and/or Tier 1 organisations.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems in team environments with a structured process mindset.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, both with senior leadership and with a wide range of career levels.
- Awareness of design toolsets and digital business packages to drive adoption of enhanced capabilities within the team.
