The Propeller Chief Consulting Engineer leads a team of engineering specialists to deliver the capability required by Dowty for development and maintenance of its existing and future products. Working closely with the team of technical authorities for individual disciplines, this role is responsible for creating, developing and maintaining the capabilities for propellers including people, process and infrastructure, the goal being to ensure that both the customer and the business strategic objectives are achieved consistently and efficiently.

The role leads projects and initiatives with broad scope and high impact to the business, having responsibility for major and complex assignments with long-term business implications, managing issues across functional area(s) of expertise, and contributing to the overall business strategy.

  • Technical Ownership of the Propellers technical pyramid and chairing of the Propellers Design Board.
  • Accountable for delivery of Design Board objectives across all focus areas.
  • Engagement with Engineering Discipline Leaders to agree competences and development plans for team members.
  • Leadership, support and development of the controlled title holder (CTH) team, including recruitment and induction of new team members; team member career development and ongoing appraisal processes; training, coaching and mentoring for continuous improvement.
  • Collaboration with other Propulsion and Additive Technologies (PAT) and GE Aerospace Pyramids and Design Boards to share best practice and seek opportunities for mutual benefit.
  • Leadership of technical excellence within the Engineering team, including engagement with technical activities when required; creating, developing and enhancing processes and practices.
  • Support across the engineering organization where investigation and improvement activities are required including root cause, problem solving and planning for both low-level and strategic programme plans.
  • Interfacing with the production and programmes organisations to ensure timely fulfilment of projects and actions, and communication of activities.
  • Upholding and developing strong Lean principles, approaches, standard work and daily management within the team; leading and supporting Lean activities and events to achieve business priorities.
  • Active participation in the future strategic direction for engineering including engagement with external partners, introduction of new tools and techniques, and interfacing with other business functions.
  • Communication and reporting through regular reviews covering current status, projects, investigations and general activities, business issues, risks and opportunities.
  • Participation in the engineering leadership team to improve effectiveness, resolve issues, develop improved understanding and processes that better support the overall business activities.
  • Financial oversight, including budgeting and tracking of spend, approval of labour vouchering, travel expenses, project spend and other business processes.
  • Champion for technology, process and tool advancement.
  • Technical consultation and leadership for the whole propeller life cycle.
  • Leadership and guidance during the design review process, in preparation for Tollgate readiness, as well as presiding over formal technology and design milestone reviews.
  • Promotion of initiatives related to safety and reliability, supporting accurate certification and continued airworthiness.
  • Representing the Chief Engineer's Office in matters related to design excellence, practices, reviews, and design board activities, leveraging synergies with other design communities.
  • Maintain currency in related research, the aerospace industry, academic and regulatory initiatives to ensure state of the art competitiveness.
  • Technical mentoring to the global Controlled Titled Holder community and pipeline.
  • Support of engineering quality initiatives.
  • Leadership, experience and knowledge to help proactively identify and solve technical problems.
  • Promotion of documentation of lessons learned and their dissemination across the organization.
  • Support for technical training and development initiatives.

Required Qualifications / Experience: This role requires significant experience in Engineering/Technology & Functional Management. Knowledge level is comparable to a Master's degree from an accredited university or college or a diploma with relevant experience. Experience in engineering product development in aerospace or similarly-regulated industry, ideally in a UKCAA/EASA Part-21 Design Organisation.
