  • Job Summary

Lead the custodial staff in providing customer service and maintaining cleanliness of the school buildings, grounds, and equipment.

Perform all duties associated with the custodian position.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in using commercial vacuum cleaners, stripping and buffing machines, lawn mowers, snow plows, and other special tools or equipment.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools (hammer, shovel, screwdriver, radial saw, reciprocating saw, drill, pneumatic hammer).
  • Solid math skills and dexterity for diluting cleaning chemicals and floor finishes.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, proper storage of cleaning chemicals, and procedures for working with asbestos-containing materials.
  • Ability to operate additional equipment such as a tractor, lift, and auto-scrubber.
  • Physical strength to exert up to 100 lbs. occasionally, up to 50 lbs. frequently, and up to 20 lbs. constantly.
  • Strong working skills at various heights and in hard-to-reach areas (ladders, scaffolding, crawl spaces, attics).
  • Excellent communication with staff, students, parents, and the public.
  • Valid state vehicle operator's license with a good driving record; meet DASD procedures for transporting students.
  • Successful completion of all federal and state background and criminal record checks.
  • Adherence to all local, state, federal, and school code employment requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate staff for cleaning, restoration, special events, facilities use, weather events, and security needs.
  • Ensure the building is ready and operational each morning.
  • Communicate with staff, parents, and students regarding school functions.
  • Assign tasks, verify quality, and control material usage; establish performance levels and document appraisals.
  • Work with other employees to set pace and demonstrate proper methods.
  • Oversee completion of subordinates’ cleaning responsibilities.
  • Request, procure, and store necessary tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Counsel subordinates and address informal complaints.
  • Decide on annual and sick leave to maintain adequate staffing.
  • Screen, complete, and forward work requests, as appropriate.
  • Maintain clerical and record-keeping activities, including time cards and state/local reporting.
  • Conduct periodic and annual reviews of custodial employees and summer help.
  • Inspect facilities, perform repairs within capability, or submit work requests for beyond-capability work.
  • Lead training sessions on custodial operations, chemical handling, and hazardous material safety.
  • Enforce safety program and apply corrective action as needed.
  • Execute all applicable School Board policies and directives.
