Job Summary: To act as the leader over custodians engaged in customer service and the routine cleaning and upkeep of buildings, grounds, and assigned equipment. Performs the full range of duties associated with the custodian position.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to properly use all types of commercial vacuum cleaners, stripping and buffing machines, lawn mowers, snow plows, and any special tool or piece of equipment assigned for the performance of duties.
- Ability to use hand tools (e.g., hammer, shovel, screwdriver) and power tools (e.g., radial saw, reciprocating saw, drill, pneumatic hammer).
- Sufficient mathematic skills, site and dexterity to properly use and dilute cleaning chemicals and floor finishes.
- Knowledgeable of safety regulations, proper methods for using and storing cleaning chemicals and floor finishes and procedures for working in areas with asbestos containing materials.
- Ability to operate equipment (e.g., tractor, lift, auto-scrubber).
- Ability to exert up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, lift and/or exert up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, lift and/or exert up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
- Ability to perform tasks at different height levels and in hard to reach places (e.g., ladders, scaffolding, crawl spaces, attics).
- Ability to effectively communicate with staff, students, parents, and the public in a professional manner.
- Must have and maintain a valid state vehicle operator's license and a good driving record.
- Must meet DASD procedures for transporting students (including motor vehicle record check).
- Must successfully complete and maintain compliance with all federal and state background and criminal record check requirements.
Candidate must adhere to all local, state, federal, and school code requirements for employment.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Plans, schedules and coordinates, through the Principal and Custodial Supervisor, all staffing needs for the cleaning, restoration, special events, facilities use, weather events, and security needs that are required at the school.
- Responsible for building's opening and/or operational readiness each morning.
- Will be required to communicate with staff, parents and children regarding school functions.
- Assigns tasks to subordinates, checks accomplishments for quality and that the materials are used economically.
- Establishes performance levels of subordinates, documents formal appraisals of their work performance.
- Works along with other employees, setting the pace and demonstrating proper work methods.
- Ensures oversight and completion of cleaning responsibilities of subordinates.
- Ensures needed tools, equipment and supplies are requisitioned, available, used and stored properly.
- Counsels subordinates and attempts to resolve informal complaints and grievances.
- Makes decisions on requests for annual leave and sick leave, ensuring the building is properly staffed to maintain custodial operations.
- Receives and screens work requests, completes work requests within capabilities, and forwards the remaining work requests to the District work receptionist.
- Performs clerical and internal record keeping activities, including time cards, and/or any applicable data reporting required by state and local authorities.
- Performs periodic and annual reviews of custodial employees and summer help.
- Performs inspections of facilities and makes repairs within capabilities or submits work requests for work beyond the incumbent's capability.
- Conducts training sessions on custodial operations and methods, and on the handling of chemicals and other hazardous materials.
- Instructs employees on safety practices and procedures, rules and regulations, and enforces the safety program, counseling and taking corrective action as needed.
- Executes all applicable policies and directives of the School Board.
