About the team
We are an investment team focused on identifying compelling opportunities across the capital structure. As part of our ongoing thematic work, we are exploring the European elderly care and senior living market, with particular focus on Germany, Spain, and Portugal. We are seeking a motivated and analytical Masters-level Intern to support this research initiative.
Role and responsibilities
The successful candidate will lead a structured research project assessing the attractiveness of the elderly care sector across key European markets. This includes understanding market structure, regulatory frameworks, demographic trends, competitive landscapes, key operational and financial KPIs and potential investment opportunities.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Conduct market research into the elderly care and senior living sectors across Europe, with a focus on Germany, Spain, and Portugal.
- Analyse demographic, economic, and policy trends impacting the sector.
- Map out the competitive landscape and key operators in each market.
- Review regulatory frameworks, licensing requirements, and barriers to entry.
- Identify and summarise potential investment opportunities, including platforms and operators.
- Prepare clear materials, reports, and presentations to support internal decision-making.
- Synthesise large amounts of qualitative and quantitative data into actionable insights.
- To act as an ambassador for Downing’s values, and to always behave in a respectful and professional manner.
Education, experience and skills
The ideal candidate will have the following:
- Currently enrolled / recently graduated from a Masters programme (preferably real estate finance related, however other relevant fields such as finance, business, economics etc. will also be considered).
- Strong research, analytical, and critical-thinking skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and produce high-quality output.
- Interest in healthcare and real estate investing.
- Fluency in English required; proficiency in German, Spanish, or Portuguese as well as knowledge of these markets is an advantage but not essential.
